I think its much more important nowadays to learn about technology than learn how to multiply in your head for example, because technology can do that for you. This doesn't means all that isn't important, but world connection, and usage of technology to engage in world connection is very important. I don't really know what it was like before the internet, which is kind of interesting when you think about our generation, but it must have been a whole lot harder to do school projects.

This video was an eye-opener, especially the fact that there are more honor students in China than the total American population. I think that 48% of kids under 6 years old using the internet is wrong, partially because there are some things on the internet that that age group REALLY shouldnn't see, and partially because kids should go outside and play, not shove themselves in a dark corner of a room and watch videos on Youtube. We'll have plenty of time to do that as adults when we're supposed to be sitting in a cubicle getting yelled at by our bosses. Even though i dissagree with some of this information I'm glad I watched this video, because now i know what NOT to let my sisters do when i'm babysitting them. Thanks for posting this video!

i think it was intresting how people send and receive more text messages each day than there are people on the planet. I definataly contribute to those statistics but not like some other people i know. i think it is not neccasary to sit around texting people all day while there is so many other things you could do. I am definataly remeber that in the future. I did notice most of the statistics in this video are from 2008 though.

A lot of thing`s suprised me in this video. First, it`s not good for anyone to sit inside on the compeuter or playstation, but I think that it is even worse for the children that are under 6. If you grow up with staying outside and play a lot, you will do that more when you grow up. If you are used to sit inside on the compeuter, it is easyer for you to do it when you grow up.
An other thing is that the video says: " When the average teen graduates, they have spent: 11,00 hours in school and 15,00 hours watshing TV."
That shock`s me. If you are in school for 8 hours per day, and you are supposed to sleep for at least eight hours, and then it is homework. how does anyone have time to watch that long? That means about the rest of the day spent with watching TV, what about family, what about friends? I could`nt do that!

I really enjoy searching for information on the internet. I think it is important to teach students how to use the internet as a learning organizer and not just a gaming system or socializing system. I spend a lot of time on my laptop playing video games, and using it for school is a smarter choice.c

The thing that I think is most amazing is that the amount of text messages sent and recieved is more than the population of the world. This is very amazing to me because most of this texting is by kids and adults in countries like the US and not many people in poor countries own phones to text and so a small amount of the population of the world is texting more than the rest of the world. I don't even understand why you would want to text that much anyways, but that's because I don't have a cell phone.

The video didn't really surprise me, because if you thought about an average American, they like to use their free time watching TV, using the computer, and communicating with their friends. The video did drag out the point that we are going through a drastic change in terms of technology wise, but I think that it is important to not do it too much. I mean, spending 15,000 hours on watching TV, 3,000 more hours than you ever spend in school! And 48% of 0-3 years old has been on a computer!!! That was scary. I think that we still need to learn how to do it the old way, as in learning math and those other stuff, because to do the newer stuff, we need to know the building blocks. It's not like you go on a computer and suddenly come up with a way to make a super tech that is 100 times better than a computer with out knowing anything. I'm not saying that we shouldn't try to make our technology better, we definitely should. Just we shouldn't just toss away everything else away because your too lazy too learn the basics.

This video in many ways did mot suprise me. It did not take a specialist or a 8 minute long video to show were evolving thinking more and more to create more and more. In some cases i disagree with the video lik it implies that Teachers are not teaching enough to students because if u look at scienetests who are inventing things now they learned a lot in there career specilization. To help we don't need to know about every subjectand be so good at it we could do that and not this. We might need to learn lots but thats not as much as what people think it is.

That video was very scary. However it didn't surprise me that much though. The reason that it was scary was because of the way the video conveyed the information. It says that we are ill prepared for the future. That is not completely true. Children of this generation probably are more knowledgeable than previous generations when that generation of people were children. But the thing is, our generation of children will need to be more knowledgeable to solve crisis's like the recession and global warming. The aspect of the video I find the scariest is the fact that 48% of children 6 years of age or younger get on the internet. They could see things on the internet they shouldn't and that would be very bad. To wrap this comment up, I would like to say that all of the facts of the video are mostly true but it is not as scary as they are trying to depict it as. XP

Scott J. said...

Despite what the bold yellow text says, the video does not stand out. Sure, the stuff is true, but either a) We already know, or b) it's unfair to compare the amount of students or people from the United States to that of China. China has 1/5 of the world's people in it. The same goes for India. So of course they have more honors students than we have students! Did they really think that we're too stupid to figure that out?
Obviously yes, they do. The video doesn't point out what's good about the United States, only what's bad. It's very biased and therefore inaccurate.
Finally, a lot of the facts in the video aren't bad things. Why does it matter that so many people have facebook or twitter accounts? Can't people do what they want so long as it isn't against the law?
That's just my opinion on the video.

One part of the video that standed out to me was how china's english is going to be better than america one day. That really standed out to me because America's first language is english and China is exceeding to be better in english than in America. Things at school does not reflect in what I do in school because I am not lazy and I want to learn and to serve earth and my family. I think that parents and teachers need to show and tell their students/children that its not just about friends and having fun in school and by living in earth and having fun but to study and learn about earth and about main subjects and curriculims in school.

Not many of the facts in this video suprised me.
All the facts about China were very obvious. Of cource there are more people there than here. The fact that popped out was that 48% of three year olds have used a computer. After thinking about it, I realize that even that is not suprising. I have seen many computer programs for young children. Also, reflecting on that statment, is that really a bad thing? It's not as if a three year old is surfing the web under no supervision so they can do whatever they like. Also, again these children are not locking themselves in with computers to do nothing put use them. I am sure more than 50% of those 48% young computer users only use a computer for only a short time every few days.
Overall, I personally think that this video was a bit alarm-raising. Even though, it was thought provoking and interesting.

This video wasn't a surprise for me because the more tech. evolves, the more people will want to use it. But what surprised me was when the video was saying how some kids "listen to their iPod, text, and do their geometry hw all at the same time". Wow, because I will never be able to muiti-task like that. It is believable that kids text so much, just think about how much you talk one day. (I text about 50-70 messages a day, but one time i texted 144 messages in one day:) But I think it's weird 5 year olds use computers, I can't really (and don't want to) picture a toddler on something like MySpace or Facebook. :/

I really enjoyed seeing how everything adds up, but it is kind of scary to think about how "the number of text messages exceeds the population of the planet." I add to that as well. Also in China their Bachlor of Science in engineering is 48% and in America only 5% have their baclors in Science. My favorite saying in the video was "Size doesn't matter." but really it does matter because if you add up all of chinas mobile cell phones you'll realize that they have more mobile phones than the u.s. has people,(not that you would go and add up all of china's mobile phones, but you see my point.) So really, I think size matters to everone no matter where they are. Even though we might have technology I don't think that it is right to go find all of our answers on the internet because than we're really NOT learning, and learning is a big part of every single day on earth.

Steph P - Smith Middle School said...

I think it's sad how much time technology is taking from students lives. What's frightening is the pressure put on our generation to be prepared to handle all these unknown tasks. As the video states, we don't know if the students will be able to control these future circumstances. It's also a shame that college students information will be outdated. If the students took the time and money to go to college to learn important information then why is it going to be useless and outdated in a few years? While technological advancemnt is important, teaching old information is a waste of time. Technology is definetely playing a too-large part in our lives.

This was not new to me, I've seen slideshows very similar to this one before. But I do think that this one definitely tells you in a straightforward way that America needs to shape up and stop being lazy. It shows how everyone in Asia is smarter than us and doesn't waste their whole life watching TV. I know that it is true, and that us Americans should probably get some exercise other than moving our fingers across the keyboard or the X-Box controller.

It's just amazing to see not only how reliant we are on computers, but also how much is now over seas. I was mainly surprised at the person who said they would be fine if they did'nt invest another dollar in the US, and just took their corporation over seas. It's also amazing to hear that China has more honnors students than we have students. It was also very unexpected when the video stated that 35% of teenagers text under their desk. It's just so much information, and it's not BAD info, it's just the cold, hard truth. I still can't visualize those cute little 2 year olds playing computer games when they can barely walk. But relly, after college you watch 1,000 hours more T.V., then you spend time in school?!? It's deffinately immaginable, but just extreemely shocking that that's what we all do after school. It seems like by the time we get out of college it'll be 3 tims as many texts as hours of sleep minnimum. And 6.5 hours of technology ouside of school - and more than twice as much time on the computer than listening to the good, old fashion, radio. I get it, you can interact with a computer, and not with a radio, but still, because of ipods, and online music, nobody uses a radio anymore. I mean, does anyone play outside anymore!?! The entire video was just shocking, but there were diffinnately some things that just blow you out of your seat.

Wow, this is pretty scary. Americans aren't very smart, compared to other countries! I mean, partially, it must be due to us not having as big a population as them, but it also has to be because we're "stoooopid!" Anyway, it strikes me a bit odd that college students are learning about technologies that haven't been created, preparing for problems we've never heard of. That would be like Industrial Revolution-era people preparing for global warming. Or maybe us preparing for an asteroid collision (people have already theorized what we might do to prevent that!). An odd yet cool video after all. Oh, and about how people were saying that we send more text messages than the entire world population, China has more cell phones than we have people! I mean, we really shouldn't beat ourselves up like that, saying "we're lazy, we're horrible." Still, we are, indeed, "stooooopid."

Little kids on the internet... NOT A GOOD IDEA... there are somethings that they shouldn't really be seeing...

Not surprisingly, there are a lot of texts going on every day, I see lots of people on their phones on the streets, in buildings... A LOT

That was very surprising because I never thought that children that young were smart enough to to go on the internet. But the talents of children this generation won't go to bad usage or even no usage at all. there are many crisis's occuring now that this generation will probably have to eventualy to fix including global warming, the American reccesion, and many other crisis's. The world needs to change and the only way possible is through this generation of children. XP

I watched the video and I agree and think it is outrageous how much people rely on the internet and electronics invented to communicate with others. The part that sticks out to me the most is the fact that when the average teen graduates they have spent about 11,000 hours at school and 15,000 hours watching TV. That means they have spent 4,000 more hours on TV than on school. That is strange because you spend most of the average school day in school and when you have home work that eliminates some or all the time you may have had watching TV. Another point that sticks out to me is the number of texts sent every day. The number of text messages sent every day surpasses the population of the planet. We don’t realize the number of messages we send until we get a cell phone bill. The average teen relies on technology too much and we are using up our resources.

Do i really spend that much time on the computer? I guess so . School only drags on forever because its boring so i guess technology time is more fun so it seems like less time.

I too think it is sad that technology now holds so much of our lives. I identify with this since I read blogs, create content, use wikis for school and fun. We should think about more important things, like family and friends and the physical world. I was surprised by the opening fact about education's level of "IT intensiveness". How is this measured? What if education were number one? You would only learn about technology in school and none of the social skills that you need to interact with people. I was also surprised to see a big spelling error: "FORIGN". I was surprised that the ending of the compelling, emotional violin background was "shift happens", a particular allusion to not being able to stop bad things. I think we all have to try to realize what technology is for and remember that there is no reason not to live for happiness and we should make the best of it and not spend 24/7 with technology like this recent Wall Street Journal article "Not So Fast" by John Freeman says: http://online.wsj.com/article_email/SB10001424052970203550604574358643117407778-lMyQjAxMDA5MDIwMzEyNDMyWj.html

The claim that caught my attention was the one stating that, "1 out of every 8 couples married in the U.S. last year met online." If this claim is true, then I feel as though the definition for 'love' has changed. The internet is one of the easiest places for false truths and also very simple to create a false identity. How could you truthfully say, "I love you" to someone online when the 'person' who you 'love' may just be a couple of kids of the opposite gender who made an identity for fun? You may not have ever even seen their true face before! Is that really what love is today? Simply seeing a couple pictures of a different person and feeling a bit of affection? The U.S. should get their minds straight, go outside, and meet someone there.
Don't get me wrong, sometimes online dating websites could help you find your partner. But 1 out of every 8 is a large percentage of couples. Let's not forget about the other people around us, and not get so into internet dating usage that we begin to depend on the internet for our husbands and wives!

I was really surprised that US department of commerce ranked education dead last, that shows how much effort the government puts into education, we need smarter people and better education. There was also a question that said " are you using a blog in your classroom?" I think that's ironic because this blog comment is our homework. The last thing is the part that says how much money factory workers, nurses and teachers make in china, I was really surprised to see teacher as the one that made the most, because here at America, teachers make the least money(no offense....)so yea. Overall, in my opinion, technology is weird but is also taking over our lives.

Although I am content on how technology as progressed, I know students may be taking in a little too far. Some students feel the work they receive in school is difficult, causing them to relieve their stress. I thought is was atrocious that an average teen graduate has spent 4,000 more hours watching TV rather than studying for school. Television basically takes your mind off studying for a career and fills it with short-term junk. Also some students learn about computers or some technological device, only to find out that it will be outdated in a few years? How will that help in any way? Technology plays an important part in people's lives, although it may play too big of a part in others.

There were quite a few things that stood out to me in the video. First of all was when it said that some teenagers text while watching TV, listening to their iPods, and doing homework all at once. Also, how the fastest growing age group for using the internet is age 2-5. The part with the statistics about the children in China and India didn't really surprise me because my mom and dad were born in China and they tell me how life was as a child there and they had to do at least three times as much work as we have to do in America. The part that said that China would soon become the number one English speaking country in the world surprised me at first but then after I thought about it, I realized that the first time I went to China, everybody there wanted to learn English and they were really enthusiastic about that. Imagine if we lived in the early 1900's. What would we had done differently from what we are doing now? It really makes me think about all this stuff.

What I was wondering though is that is this all spent at home, of is it at home and school, because many teachers make us watch documentaries sometimes. If I could find out what percentage of this was at school that would help me with my question. I don't know anybody who spends 6.5 hours watching television. The numbers are just average. Another thing I noticed is how ironic this video is. The video is about NOT using too much technology in our lives but the ironic part is how the video was posted on Youtube. Very interesting indeed. :)

I think we should change some of the ways we do things to meet up with technology, since it is getting more and more advanced as we speak. In the 90's, only ten years ago, facebook, myspace, and youtube didn’t exist. Having accounts on both youtube and facebook, it is hard for me to believe. Personally, I like technology, I like typing more than writing, I like Google better than a book, I like computer games better than board games, so I think we should embrace technology.

The "When the average teen graduates, they have spent: 11,000 hours in school and 15,000 hours watching TV." statement surprised me. I don't get how someone could actually spend more time watching TV then being at school. I am at school at 8:00am classes start at 8:10am and we don't get out until 3:10pm. I go home, get on the computer and check my emails, then I do my homework. Usually by the time I finish everything I go to bed. I hardly spend anytime watching TV unless I'm on vacation or it's the weekend.
A statement that didn't surprise me was the - "81% of students have email accounts, 75% of students have IM, and 97% of students believe technology use is very important in education." I even agree with the last part. I think it helps a lot to have computers in school. For one it's a lot faster and easier to find the information you need. And things like phones and/or email are good ways to get in touch with teachers when you have questions.

I thought that the facts about how information becomes outdated in three years was the most amazing. It really shows that we need to be learning all the time even if we aren't in school because things are changing all the time and technology is becoming more important in our world. It also said that we are just now entering the main event of the technology era and that means that staying up to date on technology will also help people stay up to date on everything else that is going on in the world.

The video was very emotional and really touched my heart. It almost made me cry be cause of how it is so sad that we can get people on the moon but yet the youth are still spending time with useless activities that aren't athletic. oceans411.org is what my friends and I are trying to do to help the environment. This video was full of facts and that and captivated the audience. I will tell others to watch this because it really opened my eyes and i think it will open yours too.

Some parts really surprise me, about the 0-3 year olds, and the texting, but the part about the TVs seem about right. Many kids either go home, watch the television, and eat dinner, and do homework in front of the television, or don't do homework, and mainly watch TV. The part about China, well, it does make sense. There are very few jobs in the U.S.A., and China is a huge country. I find the movie slightly offending, as I don't play video games, regularly sit in front of the TV, or own a computer.

This video is very helpful because it reminds people that they should not spend all there time texting, watching T.V.,playing computer games and that sort of stuff. When they could be out side being active! Also I think it is just plain weird that 46% of kids 6 and under have used a computer and that 31% of that 46% are zero to three year olds! I also contribute to the 2.7 billion searches performed on google each month.

What surprised me a lot is that the average teen spends 6.5 hours with media outside of school. What didn't surprise me too much was that 97% of students think technology is important to education. I think that, too. If we didn't have computers, we'd be looking in library books for information for hours.

What really stood out to me was that the video said that China would be the number 1 English speaking country in the world. I think that could very well be inaccurate because Chinese people have their own culture and their own language though just learning English to communicate with the rest of the world. I was also very suprised that education is less than coal mining because though we might not be well suited for our future, but education covers the basics. With education lowering and business and advanced technology raising, it is hard to keep up with this changing world.

Ayaka Okamura, Smith Middle School said...

It was a very interesting video. It was very shocking that the china will take over America and be the most English speaking country! Also, some people doing there homework listening to i-pods and texting on there cell phones was REALLY shocking. I knew that the technologies were getting popular and I think that we are too much depending on cell phones, computers, and other technologies but, development of technology is the most critical thing for us in future. We will need to be accomplished in using technologies. Besides we just play and use them, and need to exploit our skills and talents in using and developing them. Anyway, this video sure made me and all my family think A LOT. I hope there is a way to change us for the better!!

I think that this was a very informative and interesting presentation and it really opened my eyes with regards to people of all ages use and are dependent on technology. The one that really suprised me was the fact about how the fastest growing age group for using the interent is only 2-5 years of age. I always knew technology is a big part of our lives, but I never thought it was this big. All in all, I think the presentation was very well put together on giving the facts about technology and where we are headed from here.

The fact that really stood out in my mind was the fact that the fastest growing age group for using the internet was people aged 2-5 years old. This surprises me because when I was that young I don't remember using the internet that much, and it's strange to think of how much the world has changed since only a few years ago. Another thing that surprised me was the fact that when the average high school student graduates from high school, they spend only 11,000 hours in school, while they spend 15,000 hours watching television. Personally, I don't see how this is possible, since I go to school for 7-9 hours every day, and I rarely ever watch TV. Even though all of this information is outrageous, we still need technology to survive. I guess we don't think of how much technology we use everyday, but if you asked an average teenager to give up their cell phone, it's hard to imagine them going for more than a week without it. It's strange to think about what the world will be like in 20 years, since it's already changed SO much in the past 20 years.

What was interesting was that China would be the biggest English speaking country. Also, the fact that half of what you learn in freshman year for college would be outdated so quickly.

The part in this video about how much time teens spend outside of school using media--6.5 hours--surprised me at first. In comparison, we usually spend 7-8 hours of our day at school. But when you think about the fact that 97% of teens believe technology is very important to education, it makes sense that we would spend 6.5 hours outside of school using media. The more teachers encourage the use of media in class AND outside class (for homework), the more time people our age will be spending using media. I also wonder how some of the claims in this video were verified, because it seems like the amount of time teens spend using cell phones, the internet, etc. would vary based on the person's lifestyle. For example, I have a cell phone but I only use it when I am away from home and need to call someone. The claim about listening to music while texting while doing homework also stood out to me because it was just labeled "Life as a teen". I think that since teens have varied lifestyles and interests, claims such as these should not be made to prove a point about teen life in general.

One sentence in this video stood out really clearly for me: "What needs to change about our curriculum when our students have the ability to reach audiences far beyond our classroom walls?". I agree with this, because these days, with the advancement of the internet, anything you post online can be read by almost anyone in the world. Social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Myspace help this too. You can type in your opinion as soon as your brain thinks it, press enter, and who knows who will be reading it later? We want to educate the world, and what better way to do so than to use the internet? Teachers greatly influence students. If something a teacher taught them in class fascinated the student, they might post it as their status on Gmail, or twitter it. A couple of keystrokes is all it will take. But if teachers don't teach the curriculum in interesting ways, the student won't care. I think the internet is crucial to learning. Most kids and teens know more about technology than their parents. Kids and teens generally like using technology. They can connect with their friends, play games, talk, text: the possibilities are endless. Technology can also be used to learn. I agree with that statement, about us being able to reach audiences beyond our classroom. It's true, and we could change a lot using the internet.

In this video something that surprised me was that after school the average teen spends about 33% of time on the internet, 26% of time watching TV, 21% of time on the phone, and 15% of time listening to the radio. If you add up all of the numbers you get a sum of 95%. This means that teens only spend about 5% of time doing homework or reading. Then say someone gets home from school around 4 p.m. and goes to bed around 9 p.m. That leaves you with 5 hours (300 mins). I did some math and found out that 33% of 5 hours would be about 1 hour and 40 mins(100 mins), 26% would be 1 hour 15 mins(75 mins), 21% is approximately I hour (60 mins), and 15% is 45 mins. That is a total of 4 hours and 40 minutes just using technology. Then that 5% of time not using technology is only 20 minutes for doing different activates. That males me wonder whether those statistics were completely accurate. Then again if they were correct that would be completely shocking! I can admit that I do use technology a lot, but I always give more than 20 minutes to homework and other important things.

The video didn't really surprise me much, if you look around at school, you can see that most people have cell phones, Ipods,MP3s
and use them regularly. I can't imagine life without being able to log on to the computer and google it, mostly my resources are only on the computer. The thing that caught my eye the most was that the most growing group was 2-5 year olds, when i was 2 i don't even think I knew what a computer was. Another thing that surprised me was that 48% of children under 6 have used a computer and that 31% are 0-3 years old. I agree with the movie in the sense that technology is moving forward and I believe that 30 years from now our children are going to say "mom/dad what is a computer?".

The statesments that really surprised me were the ones that said 31% of the people that use the computer are 0-3 year olds and that 1 out of 8 couples met online. I can't believe that children that small already used the computer and didn't even learn to speak yet. I also never knew that so many couples met online, without knowing or seeing who they were. That is SHOCKING. One of the statesments that I thought was inaccurate was the one about when teens graduate, they watch more tv than spend time at school. Since teens spend about 6-7 hours at school and doing a lot of homework, how can they spend more time watching tv? The one about China having more people with the highest IQ, than people in North America is inaccurate also. 25% of 1.3 billion is 325,000,000, which is the population of the U.S, not the whole continent. Overall, though, I think the movie is really thought-provoking and will make us see our future more clearly.

In some ways this blog was not surprising in the least, though still enlightening. the fact that only 5% of our u.s. majors last year were in engineering is devastating, we've come to the point where we are soon going to be using technology in almost every aspect of our lives. we do not learn nearly as much about new technology as we should be. is it because our education directors think this teaching would cost to much? is it because they dont think we need this knowledge? whatever it is, they need to be persuaded. we are in the 21st century, and things are changing.

I find it interesting that there are more text messages sent everyday than people in the world. It surprised me when the video stated that we are training for jobs not yet created and training to solve problems that haven't been identified. So I think this means teachers and schools need to focus more on problem solving. I was also surprised when I read that teachers make almost twice what a nurse makes in China. It shows me that they value education more than we do in the US.

I enjoyed reading the facts about China and India, and I think it means that Asian people are a lot smarter than Americans give them credit for. Also, it says that maybe the world is evolving too fast for everybody to get their heads around. I think that this video is good and informational, also, it doesn't drag, it gives you straightforward things that we might actually have to look out for in the future, because the video says that if you have been learning for three years, the info you learned in the first year is pretty out of date. It was interesting to learn how technology and the capability of gathering information is so efficient.
It didn't really surprise me that teens spend a lot of time on the computer, but it did surprise me exactly how much time they spent. It also surprised me that people really depend on technology nowadays. It provided good factual information that we might need to know someday.

What really surprised me in this video was that half of what we learn in high school will be outdated by our third year. I'm not so sure that there is a way to fix this problem, because you can't look into the future and be able to tell what you're going to learn later on. So, even though what we learn will be outdated, I hope that we can still find a way to make use of what we will learn.

I have seen something like this before so I wasn't particularly suprised, but I still can not believe that the things said in the video are actually true. The one that I could connect to the most was "Life as a teen: Text messaging someone and listening to their ipod and doing geometry homework at the same time." I'm not saying I do this often but sometimes I catch myself answering a text while math homework is sitting in front of me. Another thing that stood out was the blog facts. I have been thinking of getting a blog as I think it is a great way to share your feelings and thoughts publicly. I have also been using blogs in two of my classes. The fact that suprised me the most though was that every one of eight couples married in the U.S. last year met online. It just goes to show how much internet influences our lives.

Some of the addressed topics in this video really caught my attention. Like how 1 out of every 8 couples married in the U.S. last year met online. I mean, what happened to good old fashioned dates? I'm not saying this is a bad thing, I mean, the point is that two people are brought together, but at the same time, maybe we rely a little TOO much on technology. I am not saying that we should all just stop using technology, I just think that as time goes on, we need to remember the good fashioned parts of life, such as reading from a book or writing with paper and a pencil. We should never just leave those talents behind, no matter ho high-tech the world becomes. I do, however, think everything is accurate. One fact that didn't surprise me was the one about how more text messages are sent everyday than the amount of people in the world. I mean that is one text per person, and even though some people don't text, a lot of people text more thanone message a day so that it all evens out. In the end, I am very thankful for technology. I wouldn't have been able to complete many school assignments without it! That is my opinion of the video.

It shows how fast technology is expanding and eventually it will all be too much to handle. I cant beleive some of the things I saw in that video. I think that teachers should incorporate technology into our education but maybe we should stick with note taking on paper instead of taking notes on iphones or something. Im really surprised at how much time people spend using technology, especially young kids. I remember when I was young playing a few computer games but not surfing the internet. I think kids should learn about technology at a young age but not actually use it that much.

Sabina said...

To me, the biggest, most terrifying fact is that the # of text messages sent each day exceed the population of the planet, and I, personally, do not contribute to that. I think that the video is slightly alarmist, though I wholeheartedly agree that we spend too much time on the computer, or texting, or watching T.V. I do, however, believe that the expansion of technology is a good thing, but only if we use it in a meaningful fashion, such as programming robots to perform surgery leaving minimal incisions, teaching kids to do algebra with a video, or creating a program that can tell you what supports you will need to build something, instead of texting your girlfriends about the shoes you bought at the mall today. To sum it up, I think that technology is a great thing to teach and develop advances in medecine, architecture, etc. , but not to use as a source of entertainment as much as we do now.

Students today need to learn along with the developing world. we have all these great opportunities; why not take advantage of them? Computers and technology in general are changing how people learn and how information is broadcast. Information today is moving much faster than ever before, in seconds an idea can span continents. This means that people today have to work that much harder to catch up, a daunting, though not impossible, task. No doubt there will be even more advances over the years, so it is even more important that students of today are prepared for the technology and learning of tomorrow.
One of the quotes that really stuck with me from the video was that "There are over 2.7 billion searches performed on Google each month. to whom were these questions addressed B.G. (Before Google)". I think it really shows that the human mind is always expanding, reaching out, learning, developing, and creating new things. There is so much that can be accomplished if we open our minds to what is out there. We need to be adept at what is, so we can create what is not. Technology is here, and probably the best resource we have now. it compiles information from people worldwide, it lets many minds work on many problems simultaniously. it is what allows people everywhere to help one another and to be aware of where we live, and where others do as well.
Technology is a huge part of today's society, therefore it should also be a huge part of today's schools and educational experiences.

I think that its also kind of sad how many people are on email, facebook, and other things like that. I really think that Americans need to start puting education first. In a lot of countries, education is very highly valued and even cherished. I'm not saying that we should give up email or TV, but we should start puting eduacation and schoolwork first. If we just do the little things like not texting until your homework is done, or only watching TV after you have studied, maybe we can live up to countries like India and China. When I think About how much teens today spend using technology the numbers start to make sense. This video even started to make me realize how many changes in technology are going on. When I look back at past classes I start to see how during the more recent years my teachers have started using technology more and more. This point really hit me when I walked into my little brothers kindergarden class and they were using a smartboard! As for learning international I think that our school does a good job at exposing us to different cultures and their school. Just last year a group of seventh graders went to China and 8th grade french students went to France. Both groups were able to spend time in the schools and interact with the students. Overall I think that this video is accurate and that technology is really changing.

I don't remember when I first got on the computer but I think I was at least 5. It was really shocking about the percentage it was higher than I would ever guess. I am happy that kindergardeners might know how to go on the computer I think that technology is a good way to learn.

While I agree with the factual reality of this statement, I don’t agree with the things it implies. I don’t think that it’s okay or right for adults to leave the world in this state to let their descendants to figure out the problems they left. It’s not okay for them to assume that when they are gone, they are gone, and what they did - be it littering, or creating factory after factory that produced harmful gases - doesn’t matter. Since we are in this predicament, however, it is essential that we are taught what we need to be taught to fix the problems “we don’t even know are problems yet”.

I thought this video was shocking because I had no idea of the numbers that were used, like if all American jobs were shifted to China, they would still have not enough jobs. Wow. Their is even a job shortage here! These numbers don't lie and I'm wondering if we are ready for the 21 century technology shift. It will change everything as we know it, as the video said. This video summed up in 8 minutes the facts right now, and showed us a preview of what could happen later.

This video really showed me how much the US depends on technology and foriegn countries to go about our daily lives. The one I really thought about was the one about how teachers are preparing students to take jobs that don't exist yet, using tecnologys that hav'nt been invented to solve problems we don't know are problems yet. It really showed what a hard and important job teachers have, wether students like learning or not. I am also surprised by the rank learning got on the list by the chamber of commerce I.T. intentivness list. Ya, I know that coal is very important to our system (not that its good for our enviornment) but the people who are going to find the better energy source after coal runs out, or we are forced to stop using it because we won't be able to live in the enviorment we created, will besomeone who is in a classroom right now, learning things in science and math that will help them figure it out. I mean, how would the adults in the wourld like it if their education had been last priority on the goverment's list? They probably would'nt be as smart as they are, and therfore the economy and enviornment would be in even worse shape then it is.

The fact in this viedo that stood out to me the most was when it said if you took all the american jobs and gave them to China they would still not have enough jobs for everyone! That is crazy. If we are exsperincing unemployment here, then China must be going though a very very tough time. I learned from this viedo that the people in China are probly more qualifyed for our jobs then we are. We have alot of things they do not have the comfort of having. For exsample we have acses to a wide verity of tecnogly that we can learn from and yet they still are ahead of us in learning.

This video was very surprising to me because the fact that we watch/play that many hours of technology. I thought that we watch 4,000 more hours of TV than we go to school to be very surprising also. For me the few facts about India and China were the most suprising. They should really start having class for Mandrin in school because with that many honor students (and raw man-power) there most likely will be a prolonged period of time where China and other Asian countries are the most powerful goverments on Earth(Terra). Sorry, that was a REALLY long sentance.

I knew that the federal government seemed to undervalue education, but the last out of 55 is really unreasonable! How do they think their country will be able to continue to succeed if they continue to treat their education department this poorly? Surely, I was expecting education not to be too high on the list, but LAST, under COAL MINING is an outrage! To continue to function as an effective country, this next generation needs the skills to perform higher paying jobs, more productive jobs, jobs that can forward our technology, industry (and therefore economy), and our lifestyle, to bring more people out of poverty. And if they deprive this generation of the skills and knowledge, then what about the next generation, and the one after that? Will our nation sink further and further downward? The U.S. used to be one of the world's superpowers, in both technology, industry, military, government, and lifestyle; it still is. But what about 10 years from now? 20? 50? 100? Other nations are rising up, like China and India, but we...we are sinking back down, and all because of a deficit in the education department! Now, almost all of the federal money is going to the military. What will happen if we continue to let education sink lower and lower? Our next generation will not have the skills and knowledge for good jobs, so there goes industry and technology. With less industry, there will be layoffs, and the average American will poorer, so there goes higher quality of life. And with Less technology and less quality of life, a) the military will not have technology on its side, so we will be rapidly surpassed by other, and our military technology will become obsolete, but also b) people will be less likely to join the military, proudly serving their country! So really, education should be FIRST on our list, because education is what holds all the others up!

What really caught my attention is how scary it is that what we learn today and all the way through high school, and maybe college, won’t matter or be of any use in the future.
I am not that surprised by this video because I know I would rather go on Facebook than do 3+ pages of homework every night. I just think it is weird how people would rather just text on their phone than actually CALL the person and talk to them that way. If you don't think it would be worth it just to call and say "Hi, what's up?", then don't text it either. Also, do you really think it's worth it to get caught and punished for texting in class when all your really wondering about your friend is what they're doing, when you could just ask them after class if it really mattered that much?

I can't believe that some other countries have more A.P. students then we have students. Our country is smaller, but look at how small our A.P. classes are compared to our regular classes. I would say that they are 10% of our regular classes. Our schools don't show us what we need to show us, if we want to jump start our students we need to teach them to use 21st century skills, like what people will actually want to know ten years from now. We need to teach them how to communicate to many people using new technologies that people WANT to use.

I was surprised that India and China have such a large piece of their populations in A.P. classes. Our A.P. population at this point I would estimate is 10% of our student body is in A.P. classes. If our population was blown up to those countries we would still be so far away from India and China because our teaching methods are so far behind. I'm in seventh grade and I haven't gotten the opportunity to blog or create a webpage to communicate to many people at once. What will kids want to learn from in ten years?

Very few things in this video surprised me because they are facts that are just common knowledge. I mean, everybody knows that the average teenager spends more time on technology than they do studying. If you didn't, then you probably haven't been paying much attention to yourself or the world around you. However, what did surprise me was that education was last on the list of importance.I think education should be bumped up to number one because without knowledge we could have never gotten has far as we are today. For instance, if our founding fathers were idiots instead of geniuses we would never be in this country and I would probably not even be writing this blog right now.

I found the video very impacting and surprising. I was most interested in the first part of this video, which informed that the internet is a huge time consumer for most average teens. Although I don't have a Facebook acount or spend most of my time on the internet, I know many people who have become obsessed with Facebook and other websites. I agree that this is wrong and that the time people spend on useless websites could be used learning to prepare for the future. I also found the fact that China and India have more honor students than we do. Especially with the extra resources we have in America, students should be able to score as honor students. I think that Internet use has a significant effect on this. Children should not be introduced to the Internet at early ages and should not be enforced to use non academic sites as they grow older.

the thing that suprised me was that the largest growing age for computer use is 2.5 year olds. it means these kids are reading and typing before they can speak. this shows that there soon will be no spoken language, soon everything will be digital. what i mean by that is soon school won't be at school, people won't need to meet other people. all of these things will eliminate the need for spoken language.

I think one of the most surprizing statements was that in the U.S, education was ranked last, out of 55 issues, by the deptartment of commerce. Especially now, because recently there has been alot of talk about how important eduation is and how we need to improve it. I also think it was really surprizing what the clip said about shipping all of the U.S jobs to China. I knew that many people in China didn't have jobs, but I had no idea it was THAT MANY. I really think schools all over the U.S. should watch this clip because everything it says is true. We are advancing into a time of technology. We can't ignore that. I think the goverment should raise education higher up on their list and fund us so we can have more high-tech stuff at out schools(or at least fund less fortunate schools so they can HAVE computers and other things we take for granted.)

I find it daunting to consider what might change in the next few years, considering how rappidly changing things are now. This includes the changes in technology and the changes that will take place in countries such as China and India where their population size and use of technology could help change the world.

I think some points in this video are realistic and understanable, while others are just too far out and stretched beyond the extremes. I found it surprising that US education was so far down on the list of priorities, that is just not cool! But some of the other points just don't make sense. The part about children spending 3,000 more hours watching television than in school, it must be fake. We spend about 8 hours in school every day, which leaves about 14 hours left in the day. About 9 of those are spent sleeping, which brings it down to around 5 hours. I watch some tv shows, but not on a regular basis. I think this information should have been thought out a little better. The video wasn't bad, it just needed to be a little less unrealistic an preachy.

Also, the fact of people text messaging and listening to their iPod while doing their geometry homework resembles how these days students like us find a way to enjoy technology while doing homework. 25% of the people in china with the highest IQs is greater than the people we have in america. Wow. This video surprised me a lot, in every new slide there was another fact to impress and surprise me. I agree with the video that kids should be moving forward in classrooms with technology but only to an extent. What we learn is usually taught to ourselves, and when a kid goes home and messes around with a computer, or his iPod he picks up new information about that technology. Using technology at school too much would seem like a moderate distraction, considering kids would all want to mess around and goof off. Also, I think the fact relating to me the most would be "Life as a teen... At the same time they:
Text message on their phone
Listen to music on their Ipod
Do geometery homework"
This is almost exactly what I do, or am trying to stop doing :)

I think that this is saying that more and more teens are using technology to excuse themselves fromwork, and to escape thier daily lives. the phones, and the i-pods tell people that teens are caring less and less about thier homework, schoolwork, and thier education. Technology is now playing a huge role in teens life, entertainment and excuses to not do what teens are meant to do.

This video really shocked me. It's very surprising that the fastest growing age group for using the internet is from 2-5 years old. You would think that such little kids would have no use for the internet but apparently they do. I usually hear adults complaining about how teens today use so much technology and that they never did when they were our age, but I've yet to hear of someone saying how much 5 year olds use the internet, so this fact was astonishing to me. A quote that I saw on this video that I really liked was that we are currently preparing students for jobs that don't yet exist, using technologies that haven't been invented, in order to solve problems that we don't even know exist yet. To me that means we have come such a long way with technology and we are becoming more advanced in this area every day. Take iPods, for example. There always seems to be a newer and better type of iPod coming out, and I can hardly keep track of them all. I also think this statement is saying that our generation is who will solve the future problems of the world, and because technology is coming so far along, it will help us with the things to come.

This video I just watched was very interesting and shocking therefore I loved it! One of the statements I agreed with so much is that the video said, “Other countries like China or India have more honors kids than we have kids.” I really agreed because my family both sides are Chinese where they tell me quick and clever ways to do problem solving an described how engaging and determined their schools were to make them the best! When thinking back at what I did and learned at my school, I had noticed that our homework was much easier and less, we were in school for only 5 days when they were for 6, we learn slower, less, and not the most clever tips and tricks, and most of the tests are multiple choice when all my parents’ tests were free space where they had to provide answers. Newspapers, television, magazines, articles from the Internet, and even my teachers had complemented and described how good other countries were in education. Especially the ones in Asia!!! I just want to say that this statement really was on my side and was amazing!!! After explaining how other countries’ people work much harder than us Americans, I feel inspired to study hard and to really contribute to the society!!!!!

China is a big problem too, just about everything we do here can be done cheaper and faster in China. It used to be big name American politicians could say "Oh China is no big deal we still have the brain power" but now they have it. And to think that they have more honor students then we have kids is just incredible. And ever since American politicians basically called China stupid they've gotten smarter and smarter.

The most interesting statistic that I heard on this video is that the average high school graduate will have been in school for 11,000 hours and will have watched TV for 15,000 hours. This is very interesting because you don't notice the hours of TV watching, but you drag yourself through school everyday, praying for it to be over. I think that technology can be positive, even when you occasionally use it for recreation. It is a good way to send fast messages and communicate with people who are long distances away (I have a friend from N.H. that I only contact through e-mail). However, when over used, it can be a bad thing. I think that the most important thing is to find a balance point.

I found it kind of sad that china is succeeding a lot more then we are in a lot of things, especially grades and education. I always knew there were a ton of people but for there to be so many that there going to be the #1 English speaking place is crazy! What didn't surprise me is that kids spend more time on the computer then they do in school. Everyone in school is so wrapped up in the social lives that they don't have time to see whats happening to them. It makes you think that all kids care about these days is who wore what and what there doing on Saturday when they should be working on homework and studying. If kids keep going on like this there never going to be able to get a job when there older. The claim that caught my attention was that china uses more cellphones than people in the USA. That is a ton of cell phones. Also that when the average teen graduates they have spent 11,000 hours in school and 15,000 hours watching tv. I think that claim may be inaccurate, although it is an average, i still doubt the average teen spends that much amount of time watching television. The first claim that i said surprised me because it's kind of hard to think about that many cellphones, and that it exceeds USA's population. My experience in school reflects this video because i noticed that every year we are learning about new technology and bringing new equipment into our classroom. For instance in elementary i had no idea what a graphing calculator even was but when i got into middle school we used it all the time, so that shows technology in change through the years.

This video got me thinking about how much we need technology. In class, we use the projector, the computers and other sorts of technology. People rely on technology too much, and when we use technology, it becomes a necessity. We rely less and less on handwork and mental math, because calculators and word processing do it for us. We are getting our news off TV and the computer more and more, and using newspapers less and less. The technology boom is putting millions of people out of jobs and millions of robots into jobs. Another fact that surprised me was the number of people under the age of 0-3 using the internet. This number is growing steadily, and I am amazed by this fact. I think that this is a major contributor to child obesity, and I am surprised that the parents allow this to happen.
