A Passion for Dance

Smith's Global Connections Theme is Compassion. Do you notice two important words in Compassion? Compass and Passion. That is why we added the phrases: A Compass to Guide you...Your Passion to drive you. Dancing is a passion for many of us, and dancing together is a one way to bring a community together - so let us all learn a dance (Michael Jackson's Thriller dance) and create the same effect that this dance in the Antwerp train station did.

Please respond to the following questions after watching this video.  Respond with thoughtful answers and good grammar.

How would you describe the onlookers as the first man and the little girl started dancing?

As more children joined the dance, how did the crowd respond?

The "Do Re Mi" song came from the Sound of Music, a Broadway musical and movie that came out in the late 1950's / early 1960's.  Look up the history of this musical/movie and explain why you think the organizers may have chosen this song for the train station dance.

Would you have joined in the dance if you were at this train station? Why/why not?

Are you excited about learning a dance for our Global Connections Exhibit Night on Nov. 19th?
Why/why not?  Do you think you have to be a good dancer to participate?
Be sure to identify yourself by adding your first name and first initial of your last name; grade and school: Smith Middle School (students in other countries will be responding to this blog)

1. How would you describe the onlookers as the first man and the girl started dancing?

What I think~ I think that they were shocked that someone actually started dancing.

2. As more children joined the dance, how did the crowd respond?

What I think~ I think that they were even more surprised, and that they sort of wanted to join too.

3. The "Do Re Mi" Song came from the Sound of Music, a Broadway musical and movie that came out in the late 1950's/early 1960's. Look up the history of this musical/movie and explain why you the the organizers may have chosen this song for the train station dance.

What I think~ I think they chose this song because they were trying to make the children feel happy, since the movie was made during World War II, and the Nazi's invaded Belgium.

4. Would you have joined the dance if you were at this train station? Why/why not?

What I think~ I think I would've, because it's a once in a lifetime chance, and it seemed fun!

5. Are you excited about learning a dance for our Global Connections Exhibit Night on Nov. 19th? Why/why not? Do you think you have to be a good dancer to participate?

What I think~ I think I am, because it would be cool for everyone to drop what they are doing and start dancing at the same time. No, aI don't think you have to, because it's all about having fun.

The history of 'Do-Re-Mi' song is from a musical and a film. 'Sound of Music'. Maria, the maid who is looking over the Von Trapp children, after losing their mother and the father who strongly forbids frivolity, or self indulgence.
In the musical and the movie, the song have gotten together the children and Maria, and have made them happy from the unaffectionate father's comments. So the 'Do-Re-Mi' song was played on the Belgium station in order to get people united together, to become one, and be happy.

1. The crowd was a bit surprised when the girl and the man started dancing because it's not everyday two complete strangers start dancing together in a train station.

2. When more children joined in, a few of the adults looked like they didn't approve, though most of the adults started to join in after a few seconds.

3. The Sound of Music was made to portray a family's life during World War II. This movie was trying to show children and adults that even if you know you have lost everything, good things can still happen. I think this song was chosen because it is a family oriented song and many people enjoy it.

4. If I knew the dance then yes I probably would have joined in. If I did not know the dance I would have done what the other people who were not dancing were doing, which was watching and clapping.

5. Yes I am excited to learn the dance for Global Connections because I have always wanted to learn Michael Jackson's Thriller dance. NO I do not think you have to be a good dancer to participate because 1) not everyone is a professional dancer and 2) most of the people up there aren't going to be the best dancers anyway.

When the first man and the girl started dancing the onlookers was a litle shocked. They looked liked they thought the girl and the man were weird.
When more people started dancing, the crowd became more interested. The crowd was smiling and looked like they enjoyed watching.
I think the organizers choose "Do Re Mi" because it is a happy song, and they wanted it to be a happy dance.
I don't think I would have joined the dancers, but maby just standing with the crowd, and dancing there.
I am a litle excited about learning a dance for global conection, but I don't think much about it. You don't have to be a good dancer to participate, but it would make you more comfortable if you are used to dancing.

2. When more children joined the people were very surprised and they started joining too.
3.I think they chose the Do Re Mi song because it is very happy and energetic and probably because most of the people there knew the dance for it.
4. If was there I would probably not dance it, but I would video tape it like some of the people there did.
5.Yes, I'm excited about the thriller dance because its a cool song and the dance seems fun. I don't think you have to be a good dancer to dance because not everyone who dances is a professional.

The crowd started to join the children. And then everyone started dancing.

I would definitly have join in the dance if I was at that station; if i knew the moves to the dance. Because it seemed fun and I would not want to miss out all the fun.

Yes, I'm so excited to learn the dance for SMS Global COnnection. because I knew, what dance we're going to learn, and I can't wait to learn it because it's a popluar dance and i think it'll be cool to know the moves. I don't think you have to be a good dancer to participate. As long as you have fun and participate, that's what matter.

The crowd looked very puzzled and wasn't sure what was going on when the first 2 people started danceing. The crowd got a little more excited when the other children joined in. I think the reason they chose it is because the play is based in WW2 and belgium was overrun by Nazis in WW2. I would have loved to join in on the dance. It looked like everyone was enjoying themselves very much. I am very excited for the dance this year. You do not have to be a good dancer to join in. Everyone can do it

1. The people that were watching they man and the little girl start to dance looked very suprised, and at first had no idea what was going on.
2. I think the crowd finally realized that the students had choreographed the dance and that it was fun and quite interesting to watch because some onlookers brought out their camera's and cell phones to capture them.
3. The song was chosen to represent D-Day when German's attacked the Belgians, and the family in the Sound of Music fled form Austria to escape the Germans.
4. I would not have joined in the dance because i am not that great at following dance steps, but if my friends went in then they probably would have dragged me in anyway, but they look like they're having a lot of fun.
5. Yes, i think that learning any dance that represents another country besides your own is wonderful, and i am very excited to learn it. I think that no matter what you can dance to this song if your great or just okay, its not the dance that matters, its the effort put in to it.

The spectators were somewhat skeptical, kind of interested, thinking” what are these people doing? ”, but as it continued, they became more interested and figured out what was going on. This song was probably picked because children think of it as a catchy song and adults remember it from the childhood story of the Von Trapp family. This makes it a bridge between generations. I would have tried to join in on the dance, but I would have waited to see how it was done. I am very excited because I love to dance but have never done it in a group. No, I do not think you need to be a good dancer. As long as you know the basic moves and you love it and enjoy it, you can follow along. Maybe the better dancers can lead it, but with that many, not everybody can be a great dancer.

Unfortunately, this was all staged. It was a publicity stunt for a reality show.
Here is an article about it.

1.I think that at first the onlookers were very surprised to see people actually dancing when the music started. It was out of the ordinary.
2.After more people joined in, most of the crowd responded by joining in as well.
3.I think that the organizers chose this song because it was meant to be cheerful. The movie was about looking past what happened previously and be to happy about what you have left.
4.I probably wouldn't have joined the dance, because I don't know it at all, and everyone else looked like they knew what they were doing.
5.Yes, I am excited about learning Thriller for Global Connection, because I think it's a good way to show our unity as a school. No, you don't have to be a good dancer to participate, because it's not about being a great dancer, it's about having fun and at least getting the steps right.

The reaction of onlookers to the beginning of all the dancing was a look of shock. They were all completely taken by surprise. When more children joined the dance, the crowd became a little unsure, wondering what was going on and how so many kids seemed to know this dance. I think the song "Do Re Mi" was picked for this performance because it is a song of happiness and is very well known to majority of people. When people hear it, they become happy, and many have the irge to dance. If I was a part of this plan and knew the dance moves, I would have defidently joined this dance. However, if I was a surprised onlooker, I would have just stood by and watched in amazement. Yes, I think that learning the dance to "Thriller" will be very fun and something that a lot of us Smith students will be able to relate to, since a lot of us are learning the dance. I do not think you have to be a good dancer to participate. (Trust me, I wouldn't be participating if that was the case. ;) ) All you need is a positive attitude and motivation!

1.The onlookers were pretty amazed that these two random strangers would start dancing in the middle of a train station and they thought it was kind of funny.

2. The crowd still thought that they were crazy, but it seemed to the crowd that if all these children are dancing, then why shouldn't we?

3. I believe the organizers chose the song because it is very happy and has a very good musical beat to it. Also, the Sound of Music was a very popular movie that I used to love so more people would know the song.

4. Yes, because if other kids joined in, then I wouldn't be very embarrassed about it and the dance seemed like fun.

5. I am very excited to learn Thriller because I am a big Michael Jackson fan and it is one of the best selling songs ever so people will know it. I do not think you have to be a good dancer because first of all, we will learn it, and second, the important thing is to have fun.

1.) The onlookers looked as if they were in complete confusion to see and random man and girl dancing to a random song played on the PA.

2.) The parents were a little concerned but the other people were starting to be amused.

3.) Do Re Mi is all about a family in WW2 when they lost a lot. This song is very upbeat and energetic, it is a very happy song and all of the people dancing in coordination brought the unity feel to it, which symbolizes unity and happiness.

4.) Yes. I would dance, not because it would be fun, to promote unity in the world and compassion.

5.) I am excited. This is very unique and Smith students and faculty should be proud to do this because no other place in Chapel Hill is doing this sort of thing. You do not have to be a good dancer at all, this is to show compassion, not to show off dance moves. If you are bad at dancing, so what, you are still trying to show compassion, which is what global connections is all about.

When the young girl and the man started dancing everyone was really suprised. I don't think anyone was really expecting two people to randomly break out in dance. When more people joined the dance, everyones jaws literally dropped. In the Sound of Music this song is sung by kids with a very strict dad. it's a sign of hope, that they can have fun. This song also represents freedom to practice arts. I would join in if i knew the dance but if i didn't know the dance i wouldn't join in. I am excited for Thriller because i like to dance and it's easy to learn dance moves for me. I don't think you have to be a good dancer but you need to know the dance really well because if one person messes up then it pretty much messes up the entire dance and the formations and stuff.

In the middle the song drastically changed style. That came as a surprise to me. The dancers noticed this, and adjusted their style to so. When they first jumped in, they were dancing to a tune they all new. When the music changed, they continued dancing but with the new music. This reflects school because, new challenges will always come up, and it takes dedicated people to come over them. At the end everyone came together for a grand-finale. That was kind of cool. It showed that they came together to do something they liked, even though they were complete strangers.

1. I would describe the onlookers as surprised and confused. Some even seemed intrigued. It's not something you see everyday so to the onlookers it was unexpected.
2. The crowd began to smile and cheer as the children and more people began to join in.
3.The song, "Do-Re-Mi", was created during the time of the holocaust, therefore I think the reason the dancers chose this song was to pay tribute to all the lives that were lost during that time.
4.I would have joined in if I knew the dance because it seemed like a lot of fun. Why not, we only live once!
5.I am very excited about learning a dance for Global Connections because it's a fun way to keep everyone involved! Also, I've always wanted to learn the Thriller dance!
6.No, if you want to participate just do it. No one can tell you no. Even if you mess up or can't quite move like the more experienced dancers, don't care. Just have a good time!

Yes i am because it shows Michael Jackson respect.

Yes and no because you dont want to make a mistake and no because there is a mix of real dancers who kno it and ones who dont.

How would you describe the onlookers as the first man and the little girl started dancing?
I think they knew each other already and had it all palnned out.

As more children joined the dance, how did the crowd respond?
When the people saw that more children participated they also participated and everyone stares dancing.

The "Do Re Mi" song came from the Sound of Music, a Broadway musical and movie that came out in the late 1950's / early 1960's. Look up the history of this musical/movie and explain why you think the organizers may have chosen this song for the train station dance.
They chose this song because the film was in memory of Maria von trapp and the triller dance is in memory of michael jakson.

Would you have joined in the dance if you were at this train station? Why/why not?
Yeah i would of if i knew the dance and i would of totally would of becaus eit looks like it was lots of fun.

Are you excited about learning a dance for our Global Connections Exhibit Night on Nov. 19th?
Yes i am because we can show other people that we ike to dance and do fun things.

Why/why not? Do you think you have to be a good dancer to participate?
Because then who ever sees you dancing right tehy will be very impressed and would like to join.

At first they wondered the reasoning why they would do that dance in the middle of a train station, and were kind of shocked.
2
They danced along a little; and stoped and stared as well. then they decided to go along with it,

3.
The song was a song of hope, right around when they reeally needed it. it was right around the time of the war. It was filled with alot of positive energy for everyone to see when they needed it. And a contribution to the people that sereved in the war.
4.
If i knew the dance, ofcourse i would! It would be so fun and entertaining!
5. I personally am, I think everyone will be shocked. That hundreds of kids know the dance!
(:
6.
I do not think so! I mean as long as you have a good time and it is not like everyone will see your exact mistake if there is hundreds of students doing the dance.

3. The "Do Re Mi" song originally came from an advertisment. The organizers may have chosen this song for the train station dance because it is a pretty simple song to sing and the good singers in the musical can hit the high notes.
4. Yes, because if a lot of other people were doing the dance, than I would join in because I wouldn't want to ruin the dance and I would look idiotic to other people.

3. The song probably was created in that time period and it sounds exciting and appealing. The producers of the movie maybe thought that it was a happy and joyful song perfect for little kids to dance to.

4. If I had the option, I wouldn't dance because the song is not interesting to me.

5. No, I didn't look forward to dancing. But I danced the Thriller because I got extra credit for doing it. No, nobody has to be a good dancer to participate. I think that if you try, you can become a good dancer.

1. I would describe the onlookers as being interested and amazed that this man and girl would do this.

2. They started to tap along to the beat and smiling a lot more.

3. I think they chose a train station because in the musical/movie they ride in a train right before they sing this song.

4. I would not have joined the dance because I would be afraid that I would mess it up.

5. I am excited to learn the dance because I've always wanted to learn the Thriller and it should be very fun. I don't think you need to be a good dancer to dance all you need is to know the steps.

I would have joined in the dance because had i not i would have stuck out as most of the people in the train station were dancing. Having already done the thriller dance i can say that it was a great experience as it is one of the iconic dances of the US. I don't believe that you should have to be a good dancer to participate in this event.

As the man and girl started dancing everyone looked a little surprised and shocked.
After more children joined some people were still surprized and others looked happy.
I think they chose this song because it is a well known song and most people do know it.
I probably wouldnt have joined the dance because I dont like dancing.

How would you describe the onlookers as the first man and the little girl started dancing?

They were probably suprise, it's not everyday you suddenly see people dancing in a subway station.

As more children joined the dance, how did the crowd respond?

Most of them decided to join too, I mean there was music and everything, there was no harm done in joining.

The "Do Re Mi" song came from the Sound of Music, a Broadway musical and movie that came out in the late 1950's / early 1960's. Look up the history of this musical/movie and explain why you think the organizers may have chosen this song for the train station dance.

Well I don't think it has anything to do with it's old history, but probably for it's happy and fast beat.

Would you have joined in the dance if you were at this train station? Why/why not?

Though I like dancing, I had no idea how the dance went, nor would I want to bring attention to myself.

Are you excited about learning a dance for our Global Connections Exhibit Night on Nov. 19th?

Yes. It'll be fun to do and I get some extra credit, it's a win-win situation.

Why/why not? Do you think you have to be a good dancer to participate?

Well we'll be learning in the first place so if you're confident enough it'll be really enjoyable. Even if you're not good at dancing, it's not like we're all proffesionals.

The onlookers were stunned that a man and a girl just randomly started dancing in the middle of a train station to Do Re Mi from the Sound of Music. It isnt't usual when your traveling to see somebody randomly start dancing to the music played on the loud speakers.

They enjoyed the show they got to watch. Many people brought out their cameras and cell phones to take pictures. Some people even joined in to the crowd.

In the movie Maria teaches the children this song to break their nerves about their father. The people were probably dancing to help people relax on their traveling day, and to watch something and enjoy it.

Yes I would join because it would be a fun experience, i'm just not sure if I would know the right dance moves.

Yes, except I am on crutches.

I think anyone could join in. It is just fun to dance to an old time classic. Except it looked like you had to know how to dance.

I would describe the onlookers as awestruck. They looked like they were wondering what was happening.Do Re Mi came from Sound of Music. The musical/movie is based on a memoir of a family living in Austria during WW2.Song is a very upbeat and joyful. I was meant for the children to forget their troubles living during that time period.

When the first people started dancing, the onlookers seemed shocked that someone would have the nerve to start dancing in a train station, although, as more people started joining, their opinion changed from “wow, these people are crazy” to “hmm, maybe this isn’t a bad idea. The people in the station were suddenly joining in, and as more children joined in, the parents of those children joined. I probably would have joined in this dance if my parents, sibling or friends had joined in, but otherwise I probably would have been a bystander and watched it. This video is a great example of what peer pressure can do, as the number of dancers multiplied, and I think that if the first two people had not started, then there would have been no dance.
