This year's Global Connections theme is Compassion: a compass to guide you, your passion to drive you. Please read the commentary, watch the video, and answer these 6 questions:
1. What does "compassion" mean to you?
2. In what ways have you experienced compassion in your life?
A few years ago I had the wonderful opportunity to attend a BeadforLife party. This was my first introduction to this amazing nonprofit organization whose sole purpose is to better the lives of hard-working women in Africa and provide them with a better life for themselves, their families, and the community in which they live. I left the party feeling great because I knew the money I had spent would be given directly to the women who had created such beautiful pieces of jewelry. It was the best win-win situation ever!

I was suprised that people treated these women so badly, and I think it is great that they are helped with housing, and it's great that the buyers like the beads also. Compassion can help make everybody equal, if everybody pitches in. Eventually, I hope that everybody will pitch in, and I would eventually like to create a successful organization like BeadforLife. I think this is amazing that BeadforLife has helped this many people.
This is pretty amazing. Finding out that one in every 5 lives in poverty; 1.2 billion! Another shocking thing is that they live on less than a dollar a day. Now with Beadforlife, they can soar out of extreme poverty, working 5x-7x the income they were working for before. Its pretty amazing what a nonprofit company can do. Go Beadforlife!
I think the BeadforLife is a great program for these people because it produces a chance that may have been unreacheable before.
Dear Ms Webb,
I was surprised to see that the org did not accept all the beads made, although it makes sense, businesswise. Also, I didnt know the beads were paper and made by hand, so I was surprised!
I already knew about the unfortunate poverty epidemic in our world, and the effects on many people it has.
Compasion for one another is posibly the greatest motivator, in the same league as greed and jealousy.
To me, compassion is being aware of other people's feelings and being able to sympathize with them.
My friends are compassionate to me when I am upset.
I had no idea such beautiful beads could be made of paper. I've done the same thing, using strips of colourful magazines, but my beads ended up looking strange and warped.
I learned that 1.2 billion people live in poverty. I had no idea there were so many.
I also didn't know that people could build homes like that, all by themselves. They looked really well made.
To me, compassion means doing something for another person because it is a nice thing to do not for a reward. I experience Compassion all around me, from my friends teachers and family members. I was suprised that thay created such amzing beads out of just colored paper.I think compassion can change the world by creating less stress for people and more happiness. I can in the fture go to organization like Beads for life and halping out.
I was surprised that women used to hammer rocks all day and would get paid less than a dollar because hammering rock after rock would get to be quite hard. I also was informed that there is something called Beadsforlife.
What really surprised me was how poor these people really are. It makes me really take for granted what I have. I also found out about BeadsforLife.
I never knew that one out of five people in the world was in poverty. I also didn't know that poverty means spending less than a dollar a day. I also never heard of Beads for life. The world would be a better/ nicer place if everyone was compassionate. I could donate to a charity to be more compassionate.
I was suprised that how many people of how many woman make beads for this event. One other thing is how special it is to them
I never knew about the Bead For Life. it sounds like that it's a good organization for woman who need help for life. i also never knew that beads could be such a big help.
Here are my answers to the last two questions:
Showing compassion is an exponential thing. If you are a good role model, and show compassionate behavior, others will follow your example.
Compassion starts at home. I can be more compassionate to my friends and family, volunteer my time for projects that help others, and help support organizations like BeadforLife.
For example, there is a nonprofit organization called Rosie's Place here in the U.S. that is similar to BeadforLife. My Mom and I try to buy as many holiday gifts there every year as we can.
I was surprised that 1/5 is in poverty. Also, I can't believe that they made them work in quarries. FOR LESS THAN A DOLLAR A DAY. I get $6 a week for a few chores...
I was very surprised to find out that one in five of peoples lives are in poverty. Also I was amazed to find out that women were pounding rocks all day in the hot sun. The last thing is that I was surprised about was that these labies were making less than one dollar a day.
Compassion has a effect the world around us because if we did not have compassion then nobody would care about each other. If we did not care about each other then there would be a lot of violence in the world. You can pay attention to someone, or listen when someone is talking. Opening a door for someone or if someone falls down you help them up. Another way to show compassion is to volinteer for something like a school or animal shelther.
Annie B. smith middle- WOW that's really cool! I think it is amazing these people helping themselves out of poverty by creating the beautiful beads. Without compassion the world wouldn't go around and the women in Africa wouldn't have such a good life. I think that people donating more to charity would make a big difference in the world.
I learned that there are 1.2 billion people in extreme poverty all over the world. I knew that there were people in poverty, but I had no idea it was that many who were at an extreme level.
I was also surprised that those houses were built by those people. They looked very sturdy!
It also surprised that the women had worked for only a dollar an hour pounding rocks.
I did know that some beads could be made of recycled magazines. I think that it is a really awesome way of reusing.
Compassion can make the world a happier place, and more fun to be in.
I can donate to food drives for people who don't get enough to eat, and I can support good organizations such as this one. I can also be compassionate to people when they are hurt or upset.
Starting from knowing nothing about Beads For Life, I went to knowing about this wonderful project after watching this video. I learned how they made their beads which I thought was extremely amazing. I also learned how poor these people were. I knew they were not wealthy but less than a dollar a day that is unbelievable. Also i learned how much people relay on this project and how this project opens many more windows of opportunities for these people. Compassion can affect the world because one person who has compassion about helping people can change many peoples lives as we saw in the film. I sometimes at my sunday school donate food for the homeless to show my compassion.
I also couldn't believe that they smashed rocks with hammers and got paid less than a dollar. I think that if everyone were compassionate than the world would be better. One thing that I would do is to donate some money to beads for life and some other fundraisers that need money.
I just learned about Beadforlife. I think it is a great organization for the women. I was really surprised that 1.2 billion lived under $1 a day. I think it is a great opportunity for them to build their houses.
Compassion means to me feeling for other people and being kind and nice when they are down. I have experienced compassion when I was feeling bad from my friends and family, and given it to friends and family.
I did not know taht one out of every person in the world is in poverty. And that one organization like beads for life could make such a difference.
Annie B. smith middle- To me, compassion means that if you are compassionet then you have a big heart and are able to give a lot and not expect to have anything in return. In my life people have been comassionet to me when I was sick or hurt.
I was surprised by that the women use to hammer rocks and get paid less than 1 dollar a day,and as long as they had to do this that job could get very difficult. One thing that i learned is that beadforlife was a organization that helped the african people have the money for what they needed. I think compassion means doing something for somebody else.Thats wat I learned from this video
Compassion means a lot to me because without it the world wouldn't work. People have to work together to do great things.
I was surprised that a single organization could help so many people. It is good that they get money doing something that they love. Africa is a hard place to live in, what with all the poverty and civil wars. I was amazed when I saw that they had brick houses, because they probably cost a lot more than houses made out of branches. Houses like that are a sign of getting a better salary. I know that my mom loves beads, so I will buy some at some point.
Compassion means that you are going above and beyond to help someone in need. I've seen a lot of compassion in my life. Mother Teresa is like the vision of compassion. I look up to her.
I learned, from the video, that people living in poverty live on just a dollar a day. That justs seems impossible to me. I like the BeadforLife program.
Compassion effects everybody all around us. To me BeadforLife is a great example of that.
I was supridsed when they said that women crushed rocks for less than a dollar a day.
I never knew beads could be made of paper. and that women would sit in the sun, breaking rocks for less than $1.
compacion effects the world with goodness & happyness. My mom Works at the I.F.C. (Inter Fafe Counsil) they help the poor, homeless, & neady and I like to help them out by organizing the pantry, and the offices.
To me, compassion means helping someone without asking for anything.
I was really suprised that so many people were in poverty. Also that the women were paid less than a dollar a day before, and that Bead for Life has helped so many people. I plan to volunteer in a shelter.
GO BEADS FOR LIFE.
Genesis F. Smith middle-To me the word compassion means that you have respect for other people.Compassion also means you are passionet about everything you do.
Wow. That is hard to believe that 1 in every 5 people live in poverty. To me, compassion means to help others who need help. When something bad happens to me, my friends are compassionate. After seeing this video, I learned a lot about the poor Ugandan women who used to only make $1 a day! They had to break rocks in the hot weather in a quarry. That is unfair. But now, they get to do something they enjoy, like making necklaces out of beads! Also, they make much more money than they used to. They get 7 times as much money now! If everyone was compassionate, the world would definitely be a better place. In the future, I think I should donate more to charity.
I was surprised that the women used to hammer rocks and get paid less than 1 dollar a day,and as long as they had to do this job, it could get very difficult. One thing that I learned is that beadforlife is an organization that helps the African people have the money for what they need. I think compassion means doing something for somebody else. That's what I learned from this video.
To me, Compassion means your feeling toward something. It also means to support it no matter what.
Three things in the video that suprised were that 1 in 5 people are living in poverty. Thats like 5 kids out of our class. Another thing that suprised me was that most of the women in the village would work in quarrys for less than a dollar a day. And that dollar would be what the family would try to live off of.
I knew in some aspects that parts of Africa were really poor but not as poor as the women in the video. Thats really all I already knew.
I think that Compassion can affect the world around us alot. In thery the whole bead for life foundation wouldn't exist. The only reason it dose is because someone had compasion for those people
In the future I think I'll be more conseious of what I can do to show compasion. Because the women in Africa were showed compasion and it changed there lives
To me comppassion means, caring for others and doing all that you can for those with less luck then you. I have expirenced compasion at a summer camp. You could ride horses there, if you and the horse have no partnership or compasion, you wouldn't be able to ride. My family has also shown me compatsion, if they didn't I'd be long gone. The video surprised me a lot. I had no idea abou how many african families were in poverty. I was also surprised that they could make so many families happy, just by buying thier beeds. I am very happy that they used recycled paper, they are also doing something good for the enviorment, whether they know it or not. I didn' know that beads could be made out of paper! I knew almost nothing in this video. Without commpasion, there would be no families, there would be no freindships, I don't even want to imagine where the wrold would be without compasion. Compasion for the enviorment would lead to a better enviorment. I just hope that i can make a difference.
This year's Global Connections theme is Compassion: a compass to guide you, your passion to drive you. What does "compassion" mean to you?
Compassion means being kind to others and doing something for them that will help them. Compassion is treating others the way you would want to be treated.
Take note of 3 things that surprised you or you learned. What, if anything, did you already know?
1) I was surprised that the women lived the lifestyle that they do, sometimes homeless and earning less than a dollar a day before BeadforLife helped them earn a better living.
2) I learned that BeadforLife gave the Ugandan women a chance to earn a better living making beautiful necklaces. I am glad that they were able to make money doing a job that is useful, but also helps them get ahead in life.
3) It was interesting to learn that when the women were able to build their own homes, it was a way to give their children a home, but also something valuable that they would hand down to them later.
How can compassion have an effect on the world around you?
If everyone showed compassion, there would be no poor or lonely people. When one person is helped by another, they have the chance to return the favor by helping someone else.
What have you done or can you do in the future to show compassion?
I have worked with my church and with Girl Scouts to do service projects. I have collected food for the food bank and for victims of Hurricane Katrina. I have sent items to missionaries overseas. I also donated 12 inches of my hair to an organization to benefit children who has alopecia. In the future, I would like to volunteer at the hospital.
I think that its amazing that for every 5 people in the world, 1 person is extremely poor. It was also sad that most women that started to work for Bead For Life, only earned less than a dollar a day before. I think a very easy way to show compassion is to buy these beads or trick-or-treat for UNICEF.
Carey K.
This movie shocked me in so many ways. First of all, it is amazing how they had to hammer rocks and with that hard labor, only earning less than a dollar a day. Most people at our school live off of atleast 5 dollars a day just for lunch. It is suprising, in agreat way however, that Beadforlife has helped so many women conquer many of their problems in life. It is also suprising that they can make so many beads. I don't have close to a big enough attention span to do that.

I was very surprised by the fact that these women in Africa would usually make only one dollar a day for working so hard. I knew that there were struggles for money in certain places of Africa, but I never knew it was that bad. I was also shocked when I heard that one in every five people on the planet live in extreme poverty. I was also shocked (in a good way) of how much of a difference BeadforLife has made for these women, increasing the amount of money they make to five to seven times as much. That's great to hear. Compassion effects the world by connecting all of us together in this big world. Compassion is also what brings us all together as a school. I can show compassion by volenteering and helping others that need my assistance. A helping hand can make a big difference.
I was very suprised that 1 in 5 people are living in extreme poverty. I learned that this company is different because it allows people to work on their own and actually make the money. I was also suprised that the jobs that these women previously had was just smashing rocks. I already knew about the extreme poverty that people were living in. Compassion is the first step. When you feel compassion, you reach out to people and help make a difference. I think it is more powerful to donate your time and care for people instead of money, such as volunteering at a homeless shelter.

One of three things that surprised me was that one in five people are living in poverty. Another is that thw women in the village had to work for less than a dollar a day breaking rocks. The Third thing that surprised me was they made enough money to build those houses.
Before watching this video I had already known that bead for life is an organization where women dealing with poverty can earn money by making the beads and jewelry. I was suprised to see how much passion goes into running this organization. This is a very important issue and what seems like such a simple idea is changing peoples lifes. I was also suprised to see the results that come out of this program. Because of bead for life some women now have their own house which is a huge investment towards there future. I also didn't know that bead for life doesn't just sell the jewelry. They also have health programs and business education. There is so much compassion within this organization that compassion is all around it as well. In the future I really hope to support bead for life as a way to make a difference and show compassion myself.
I found it surprising that 1.2 billion people live in extreme poverty and are making less than $1
a day. It was interesting how the beads were made out of recycled paper, and I had never heard about this organization before. Compassion can have an effect on the world around us because when we show compassion, we feel compelled to help whoever is in need. The BeadforLife organization felt compassion, and now the people that were making $1 a day are making 7 times more. If everyone was compassionate, the world would be a better place.
While watching this, something that surprised me that the women used to make money by breaking rocks. I didn't know that you could make money that way. Another thing that surprised me was that the women used to make only $1 a day, and that was all they had to live off of. Not only did that $1 have support them, but also their children. I was also surprised that one out of every five people are in poverty. I'm very glad that BeadsforLife was founded, in order to decrease poverty. Compassion can have an effect on the world around us because it can make people see that there are people in worse conditions than we are. In the future, I can show my compassion by volunteering at any local agency, or I could buy some beads from BeadsforLife. BeadsforLife is such a great project and I hope that it will change the lives of many people.

I had no idea that the women making these necklaces had life so badly, like only making less than a dollar a day crushing rocks! I think it is really nice that once the women sell the beads they can get enough money to buy or make their own house. I was surprised that the Bead for Life group is the only group trying to get the people over there out of poverty, or at least getting somewhere with helping.
Katherine Zeng Smith Middle School 8th grade
To me, compassion means working together to create great opportunities for life of the others.
In the movie I learned, that Bead For Life is a program for women with HIV, widows, and others, who make beads and sell them for profit. This program also alleviates poverty in Uganda. I was amased that the beads were made out of paper! Compassion can really make a difference in people's life!
Sunjeev G smith middle-
Some things that really surprised me are that how many women live in a really poor lifestyle. They earn less than a dollar a day.I learned about how Bead for Life helps these women provide for their families and themselves. I already knew about how many women were tested HIV positive and usually have families who also have HIV or AIDS.
This organization is a really great way to halp african women. It really shows compassion.
Treasa
i think this video is amazing showing how some of the poorest countries. It kool how the make the beads and they are a amazing.

Pete Evans-Digre- To me, compassion means helping those who are less fortunate than yourself,or who are struggling with something that you can help with; along with being a responsible global citizen. I have experienced much compassion in my life, from my friends, to my teachers, to my parents. Form the BeadForLife video I learned that one out of five people live off of less than 1 dollar a day. I was surprised such a little effort could go such a long way, and that people acxtually buy the beads. Compasion can help eradicate poverty. I have donated money to lots of causes, and this weekend I am helping my dad raise money to take solar ovens to Ghana, a developing country in Africa.
Diego Mireles - I learned that Beadforlife buys peoples beads that they make for money. Also the people in the villages join 5 to 7 more money then they earned before. And that people are living better lives.
There's nothing I knew about in this video!
Compassion means a lot o things, and it's also really important for all of us because without compassion the world would just be a really bad place to live in. The thing that surprised me was that they used to make less then $1 by breaking rocks down. Some women due to this program have their own house to live in, an dthey use the money that they get from selling beads to pay their house bill, which is a great idea. This is changing a lot of people's lives in a good way.
Compassion to me is when you do something for people or animals without having to be asked. Kindness, sharing, love, and care is what it means to me. Compassion is something that is wonderful.
-Lauren McCrae
Before taking time to watch this i already knew what beadsforlife was. I purchased a neclace by them during last years global connections. What i did not knnow was what many others were saying about how these women try to live off of one dollar a day or less. I know that i can't do it! It's horrible to see how we are right now and compare us to them; beadsforlife is wonderfull and it helps these women with deseases not knowing if they will make it or not and their families struggeling to get out of poverty; and gives us amazing jewelry in return. :)

What supprised me in this movie was that 1 out of every 5 people on the planet try to survive on less than a dollar a day. I also didnt realize how beads for life can build such great connections between the ugandans and people around the world. It shows that you can do anything if you put your mind to it. The ony thing I knew about bead for life before watching this movie was that people in uganda made jewlrey to raise money for their country. I didnt realize how much of their heart they put into their work.

Having compassion can effect the world around you in many ways. By you simpely helping someone on the street another person might see that, and it could inspire them to help someone too. Being compassionate is a chain reaction.
On a small scale I can just be kinder the the people around me. On a larger scale would be helping in soup kitchens or donating to a chairity.
This is a brilliant opportunity for poverty-struck women to make themselves financial independent. I did not know that one out of five people in the world are living in extreme poverty. Beads for Life is a unique industry because they let these uneducated women use their hands to make beautiful works of art. Many people internationally use this system to buy jewelry and sell to look great as well as make a living. The proceeds should go to better education and health care mainly because that could provide greater opportunity for the future generations of poverty-struck countries. I did not know that Beads for Life provides housing. Also i did not know that this is an international effort. I think this program may be here to stay.
Beads for life is one of the best types of charity because it empowers the people it is helping along with providing them the resources they need to thrive.
Having compassion may save some people in the world.
Wow.. Thats sad. Its just so cool that they're trying, instead of giving up. Making those beads looks hard! Anyone know where I could get a necklace like that from them? (Besides eBay)
This is a really generous organization. I really hope that many people in other countries can benefit from things like Beads for Life. I think we should start something like this here at Smith so that we also can make a change in people's lives.
The fact that suprised me is that 1.2 billion people are living in extreme poverty. I already know that there is a lot of poverty in the world and that extreme poverty is less that a dollar a day. The amount of poverty is truly staggering. The previous profession of the women also suprised by their previous jobs of smashing rocks in the quarry for little money. The condition of the qomen is also very suprising.
I already knew of this organization and I think it is great they are doing this.
One thing that surprized me was most women worked by crushing rocks for about a dollar a day.It was also surprizing that they had enough people making beads and they could fund many new programs for the poor people. The amount of people that got something out of this was amazing. Some people could buy there own houses take classes and other things. One thing I already knew was about the bead neclaces.
1. Three things I learned and that surprised me are that 1.2 billion people live in extream proverity today (1 out of every 5 people in the world, woman use to work crushing rocks before Beadforlife, members are earning 5 to 7 times more then what they use to. I already knew that the beads were made out of recycled magazines.
2. Compassion can help people who are under privlidged and can really help people. I have helped with BeadforLife and have donated and helped with charitys in the past and I hope I can contuinue to do this.
I was surprised that 1.2 billion people can survive with less then a dollar a day. I was also surpised that women smashing rocks for a day would only earn a dollar. I also learned about the extreme poverty these people live in. Compassion can effect the world by allowing people to live at peace together. It can take people out of the worst situations and give them the best. I can show compassion by volunteering in organizations like this.
Nikhil Shankar
I didn't know so many women in Uganda had HIV. That surprises me. It also amazed me how having your own house can mean so much. The meaning the beads have for these people is stupendous. I never would have guest that Beaded neckloaces could have that great of an importance. Compassion can have a huge effect on people's life. One reason is karma: what goes around, and another reason is that once you've shown someone else compassion, you given them the strength to make it through a hard time, isn't that sense of self gratification enough? In the future I can be more proactive in helping others in need. So far I have just glanced at charities andbrushed them aside, now I will actually help.
Smith Middle School - 8th Grade
It surprised me how much poverty there is around the world and how we can do such a small thing like buying beads to stop it. I was also surprised if the women make beads for a while they would have enough money to pay for medical bills and even buy their own house. Lastly, i learded that if we support these women by buying beads then poverty could be obolished quite soon. I already knew from last year about beads for life because we had a sale in our spanish class, but i didn't really know what it was for and what amazing things it can do for the less fortunate.
This year's Global Connections theme is Compassion: a compass to guide you, your passion to drive you. What does "compassion" mean to you? In what ways have you experienced compassion in your life?
compassion to me means the love you show for something you care about. My grandmother took care of me most of my life, thats what i think compassion is..
Watch the video below and take note of 3 things that surprised you or you learned. What, if anything, did you already know?
1.2 billion ppl live on less then a dollar a day. Many women have H.I.V in Africa. Beads for life is very helpful.
How can compassion have an effect on the world around you? What have you done or can you do in the future to show compassion?
I can help out wy more when we do global connections and helping other countries activities. Compasson change the world very easyly if everyone had it. There wouldnt be wars, paverty, and or anything.

This year's Global Connections theme is Compassion: a compass to guide you, your passion to drive you. What does "compassion" mean to you? In what ways have you experienced compassion in your life?
Compassion to me is selfless giving or helpnig. In theory my birth was compassion from my parents, thanks to them I am able to enjoy life and do what I want.
I am living a compassionate life because I live in a community mixed with different races and religion and if you are not compassionate to others and you do not respect any of their beliefs then you just will not be able to live there or get along there
I do not object to any part of the charter because if we did not live compassionately we would not be able to live at all. There would be too much fighting and dispute.
The onlookers were very happy and looked like normal people that were just having a nice party and have a good life.
As more children joined the dace the crowd responded with laughter and loved to see the children having fun and not living in poverty.
The word compassion to me is to help others in need.I have experienced compassion when my friends share with me. One thing that surprised me in the video was that women in africa only made 1 dollar a day fro crushing rocks. It was also surprising that many people were able to get new things because of bead for life. Some programs were also made to help people.
I dont think i have really showed much compassion.I think I should help people more often in the future.
Compassion means to me caring for someone and trying to help them get to a better place in their life. I have seen a lot of compassion and to me just like a teacher helping you and showing you that they care to help you learn is compassion. I was suprised that wemon make 5-7 times more the amount they used to make. I am also suprised that some of these people live off like a dollar a day. I am also suprised that wemon spent their day smashing rocks. I knew that the bead for life was a great foundation that help poor wemon become more wealthy. I think that seeing compassion around us can make more people dig in and help make the compassion much stronger. I have donated money to foundations like this and also I think in the futrue I could volunteer at some kind of organization that helps people.
Jane Li-8th Grade-Smith Middle School
I was suprised that 1 out of 5 people live in proverty and lived on less then 1 dollar a day. I didn't realize that BeadforLife saved many woman out there by giving them money for something they made with their own hands and helping them live a better life for them and their childern. Also BeadforLife gave then homes for them and their childern.
Watch the video below and take note of 3 things that surprised you or you learned. What, if anything, did you already know?
1.That beads for life only take 1% of their total money made.
2. 1 out of 5 people are in poverty and barley make a dollar a day.
3. That some people just stay in quarries and break rocks for money.
I didn't really know much besides that.
How can compassion have an effect on the world around you? What have you done or can you do in the future to show compassion?
It'll make people more happy and prevent others from being hurt. And I continue to be nice to everyone, and try to help the world.
1. I think compassion means you give what other countries need to them and later they can return something back to you when you are in need of something that you don't have. What I have experienced was selling things last year when I was in 7th grade in order to help save people from diseases (malaria). I only managed to raise $2-3, but it was worth taking the time out to help fight malaria with a little bit of money. What I could do would be to donate some of my allowance from my parents to organizations and foundations, such as the Red Cross.
2. I was surprised that 1.2 billion people were living in poverty. I didn't really expect the number of people in poverty to be so high. Also, I learned that it just doesn't have to be men that earn the family money, it can be women who roll beads all day long out of the paper we recycle. In addition, I discovered that the people paricipating in BeadsforLife are making way more than they made before they discovered this program.
3. Compassion can help us later. If we donate to the other countries in need today, those countries that we help will in the future (if we are in need) will return something back to thank us for the donation. A $200 donation could save a family and later, you may look at that donation and realize that you saved a family from being homeless for 1 month. In 7th grade, I helped out with raising money to help fight malaria. Even though I raised only $3-4, it was worth helping the fight against malaria.
I am suprised that millions of people are going through poverty and they are earning less than a dollar a day. The women who make the beads use recycled paper. before bead for life women crush rocks with hammers. People who make beads earn five times more money than other jobs.
People from other countries who are buying can help people in africa.
In the future I can help by buying beads.
To me, compassion means going out of your way to help someone else's life be better. I have experienced compassion by a teacher staying with me after to school to help with something i was struggling with. I learned 3 things from the BeadforLife video. One of them was that 1.2 billion women live in extreme poverty trying to live on less than 1$ a day. Second, the women from BeadforLife now make 5-7times more money than they did before, and BeadforLife is working with these women to try to eliminate poverty. I already knew that BeadforLife was an organization that helped women earn money by rolling beads and making them into necklaces. However, I did not know how excited these women get when they are told that someone is going to buy their beads. People having compassion in the world shos that we do care about each other. No matter how many wars and battles we fight, we still care about each other. I can volunteer to show compassion which I definitely plan on doing in the future.
How can compassion have an effect on the world around you?
Because some people dont like showing compassion and they are hurting other people.
What have you done or can you do in the future to show compassion?
I like to get along with other people from diffrent contries and like to help them out.
This year's Global Connections theme is Compassion: a compass to guide you, your passion to drive you. What does "compassion" mean to you?
Compassion means to me helping other people and caring about other and not only urself.
In what ways have you experienced compassion in your life?
Because sometimes when our family dosent need something instead of throwing it away we donate it.
Watch the video below and take note of 3 things that surprised you or you learned.
1.That people get so happy just because of some beads i never knew that a bead ment so much to people.
2.the beads are made oof recycled paper
3.With just one bead that you sell like veryday you could buy a house and taht they earn 5 times as more than what they used to do.
What, if anything, did you already know?
i dint really know anything so this made me learn so many things.
To me compassion means passion from others to myslef. I have been in trouble but then i made it up to my parents.
I was suprised at in the movie it said that one out of five women work in a rock quarry smashing rocks for less than a dollar a day. Beadforlife is an organization that has brought the U.S. and Ugananda together and we are helping them make money. The last thing is that there are 1.2 billion peple in poverty. I did not know any of this.
Compassion can affect anyone so it happens all the time. I was goin to the store with ,y mom and I had twenty dollars. We got to a traffic light and there was a homeless man. I gave him ten of my twenty dollars.
The 3 thigns that surprised me the most during the BeadforLife movie was that 1.2 billion people live in extreme poverty and have to try and survive off of less than $1 a day. Another fact I was shocked by was that the beads have become the main currency creating both income and action against dehumanizing poverty. The last thing I learned was how the women actually make the beads which is by rolling the beads out of colorful recycled paper. That is how the impoverished women gain the opportunities to earn a living. I was already aware of the fact that for every 5 people, 1 of them is in extreme poverty but I only knew that because my dad works in Africa quite a bit and wants me to understand what a privilige I have for being able to live the way I do. Compassion can have a huge effect on our world because if you show people that you care and are willing to help, just by doing that you'll be helping them get by from one day to the next and hopefully making our planet a more friendly one. In the future I can go and volunteer in places were poverty is a big issue and do my part to give back what they have given to us. Compassion to me means that you're always willing to help without expecting something in return. I've experienced compassion from friends when I didn't do so well on a test and they offered to help me study to do better the next time.
1. What compassion means to me are the reasons what make you have a passion and why.
2. Once I struggled with a problem, but because I had compassion it helped me over come my problem.
3. What suprised me was that there was 1.2 billion people living in poverty today, that there was a lot of people buying the bead necklaces, and that the Ugandan women built their own houses and had enough money to afford it.
4. To be honest, I really didn't know anything.
5. Compassion can help the whole economy in this world.
6. I can help out more in my community by picking up trash or mowing someone's lawn.
I love that the program gives the women in Africa an opportunity to work towards there goal, instead of just giving handouts. Now, they have a job, and make more than they made before. I was aware that the poverty levels in Africa, but it is still suprising to see the amount of poverty there.
Compassion means helping out or being kind without being asked. You can show compassion in many ways like donating to a charity or helping someone in need.
While watching this video I was surprised that 1 out of every 5 people on the planet are trying to live on 1 dollar a day. The women that now make beads used to earn 1 dollar a day for smashing rocks. I learned that the women earn 5 to 7 times what the earned before.
In the future I can donate to Goodwill or the Thrift Shop.
1. In my opinion compassion means people helping others who are less fortunate, providing basic rights to others and just be kind to fellow classmates.
2. 3 things that surprised me were when 1.2 billion people around the world live in poverty, how they put their heart in this and never gave up, and that so many people got involved and tried to help. That is pure compassion towards others.
3. Compassion can effect the world around us in may ways. For example, Bead For Life. Many people paid attention and put their heart into the project and started sell beads all throughout Africa and America. It really made a difference to those in need. I can do fundraisers and buy some jewelry from Bead For Life!
Compassion to me meansshowing love and gratitude towards other people.
I went through an extensive surgery this summer and so many people showed me compassion. They talked to me, they came to visit me some people even brought me gifts to help pass the time away.
3 things I have learned:
1. How much poverty these people are in and how bead for life helps them.
2. Bead for Life builds homes for the women who "bead for life" so their family can experiance a home feeling.
3. When you come to the villages there are beads hanging everywhere on clotheslines.
I already knew Bead for Life is made by Ugandan women to help afford their essential needs.
Compassion around the world will make the world nicer to everyone else. If one person shows compassion then the person that just recieved it will show compassion to someone else and so on and so on.
I can help people with little things, or say a compliment to someone just to make them feel better about themselves.
Compassion to me is helping one another during hard times and treationg others with respect. It surprised me that there were so many women made 5 to 7 times as much as they used to. Plus i didnt know that all those women earned less than a dollar a day by working in a rock quary. I already knew that many people in africa are hit by poverty but it's still surprising how much they are effected. Being compassionate came boost anyones self respect if you would only stop a moment and give them what respect they deserve. When my friends are having problems, being able to help them feels really good.
1. What does "compassion" mean to you?
some thing thate gides me to the things ido
2. In what ways have you experienced compassion in your life?
probebly wen my cousin gides me tord high school and tels me not to drop out
Kevin Merritt Smith Middle School
Before watching this video I was alreay aware of BeadforLife, but I never watched how passionatly they work in action untill now. Having compassion can have a big effect on the people in your life and the people around the world. I have not contributed to charities as much as I would have liked to in the past, but I do participate in the activities that my church offers and I hope to continue doing that.
compassion means that you care for other people and you do somthing for those people to make their life better
my parents show compassion to me by caring for me
Women would break rocks for a quary for $1 a day!, that they had the ambition to make beads all day, and the fact that this oganization had to be made in the first place people all around africa live like this and we are lucky enough to live like we do!
compassion lets people know that you care about them, it will affect people just like the people in africa that participate in bead for life
I have passed out programs for UNC graduation.
1.I knew about bead for life from last year because I bought some earrings. I also knew what they were trying to accomplish, I didn't know how many people it affected.
2.People can have a home that they can live in. They can also have food to eat and be able to feed there families. It is amazing that these woman can make thier out of extreme poverty.
3.I could start by donating more to goodwill and other places where people that don't have alot of money can go and get clothes and toys for thier cghildren and families. I could also buy more of the bead for life beads to help the woman who make have a better life.
1)To me compassion means spreading wealth and love and being caring.
2)Whenever somebody did something kind.
3)It surprised me how bad poverty was in Africa, I learned that it's not that hard to make a difference to some ones life.
4) That there are groups that fight poverty already.
5) It can bring people together and fight off some of the cruelty all over the world.
6)Show kindness to my peers.
Kristin Shannon
1.) To me Compassion means taking action about something you strongly believe in!
2.) Compassion has come into by my mom who inspired me when we saw a homeless person on the edge of the high way with a huge hole in his pants. So when we went home she told us to make 3 luchs that I would give you. Then she went up stairs and packed alot of old clothes we dom't wear and put them in a bag with the lunches. As we drove back to that edge of the high way and gave the bag to them their faces light. That made me think really hard about everything that could be done about this problem with poverty and homelessness.
3.)-1.2 billion people live in extreme poverty which is 1 out of 5 people on earth.
-that they can make alot of money more money than before.
-people have cried when wearing the beads.
4.)The only thing that I knew was that the beads were made of recycled paper.
5.) Compassion can change the world around me by it might cause more people to take a look around the world and take action!
6.)One thing I have done actually is iI have bought these beads from my church.
i think the way these woman show compassion is a amazing! to me compassion means people can do what they believe in with. 1.2 billion people live in extreme poverty which is 1 out of 5 people on the earth! can you believe that. Compassion can change the world. i think it was a brilliant idea to make very pretty beads out of recycled paper. when you see a homeless person on the street what do you think? I feel my heart pounding and my hands get sweaty becuase i cant believe people live like that. Compassion is a very strong thing that binds people together.
1.Compassion means to me that it is something you love and like to do and it helps you to do better in your life.It is also to me to be generous and help people less fortunate then you are.
2.One way i experienced compassion is when i once found a book that i loved and read the whole series. Another time is when my family donated money to people in Africa so they are able to get food or water.
3.One thing that i did'nt know was that woman made beads for life just to make money. 1.2 Million people live in poverty. The last thing i did'nt know wasn that the woman in Uganda use to work at a quarry and earend less then a dollar an hour.
4. I knew that many people in Uganda were poor and had no food or medicine to keep healthy.
1.Compassion means very many things. To me this means Like taking action to help people in need.
2.I have went around people's neighborrhoods and picked up trash.
3.1)I never knew they had something like this.
2)Beadsforlife actually made houses for woman in poverty.
3)1.2 billion people live in poverty making less than a dollar a day.
4. I already knew that a lot of people were in poverty. I didn't know that it was 1.2 billion people in poverty.
5.Compassion can change everything arouns the world. Just someone giving some money away to someone in need of money, can help out the world.
6.I might donate some money to the shelters and people who really need money for help to get out of poverty and such.
1. It means to help oure community like going to the shelter to help out or go to the anmial shelter and help the dogs get food or water
2. When i take care of my brother at home when my mom and dad aren't home or just helping out in the kitchen. I went to the animal shelter before and help there too.
3. That bead for life is actually helping woman all around the world. That they are helping people with HIV or widows. and that the beads look amazing and that the epople who usually get under a dollar are getiing 5 times to seven times more.
4. That poverty is a really big thing and that i knew that out of 5 people one of them are in poverty.
5. If everyone joins together and help fight poverty there wouldn't be any more after just a few months or years.
6. I have done charity/volenteer work at the shelter and animal shelter
1.) Taking action out of sympathy for others
2.) well, when ever im really upset, people who care about me comfort me
3.) .1 out of 5 people are in poverty
.After just one person bought their beds they were so grateful they promised to pray for them
. It shocked me how deeply they were in poverty, they spent less then a dollar a day!
4.) I already knew a god amount africans are still in fairly deep in poverty
5.)It can make things more peaceful and happy for others and your self
6.) I have always helped people in need, including people who aren't my friends and in the future I will help donate to charity
1. To me compassion means to treat others the same or give evryone the same oppertunitie to do somthing.
2. Many people showed there respect when my grandmother died and my godmother helped me recover it by taking me out and taking my mind off of it.
3. 1)I felt that it was accomplishing that woman can make there own money and have a hose.
2) It was interesting how people could see the work in the beads that the african workers made
3)People should all have the chance to have a house and not wory as much about money which is what this is giving people.
4. I knew that people are living in poverty and making a little more than a dollar a
5.It can save somebodys life if you donate food somewhere or make a Progect 5000 box.
6. My church got gift cards to graocery stores to buy food for Progect 5000 just befor thanksgiving. We split into groups and got the necisties for people so they can live.
When I think of the word compasion I think of being nice to other people and treat them the same way you want to be treated. In my life I have experienced compassion by other people being nice to me.
I really felt bad when they said that they crushed rocks for less then a dollar a day. I also was surprised of how many women sell beads to live a better live. And also that they sell the beads to but items to bulid their own house.
Compassion can effect the world by stop the wars, and stoping rascism. I have have felt compassion when someone makes me happy when I down.
1: To me commpassion means being kind to others and helping people in a time of need.
2: I have experienced compassion is some of the sports I do, that I'm not very good at.
3: a)I learned how many people are in extreme poverty.
b) I was suprised at how people can get out of poverty by doing a simple thing.
c) I was suprised at how it helped people so much.
4: I already knew that a large chunk of the Earth's population is in poverty.
5: Compassion can bring countries and people together.
6: In the future i will try to suport programs like this.
1.To me compassion is helping others just for the sake of helping them. i don't think that you should help someone just so you can get something from helping them.
2. One of the ways I have experienced compassion in my life is when i am sad or hurt or anything my siblings will be there to help me through whatever is wrong.
3. One of the things that surprised me is that there are 1.2 billion people living in poverty. Another thing is that for these woman just by making these beads can give them enough money to have their own houses. Something that surprised me is how many people their are making these beads and how many people in the world are in poverty.
4. I already knew that there are some woman making these beads and, i have also learned how to make these beads and how much effort and time it would take for someone to make a whole necklace or bracelet out of these beads.
5. Compassion can have an effect on the world around you because if one person starts to buy these beads then if thet tell their friends about it they might start to buy the beads to and so on. By doing this many of the people making these will have more money and a much beter living situation.
6. I have given away my clothes that don't fit me anymore and that i just don't wear anymore to the people who are in need of clothing.
Compassion means to me the people can be around each other and not fight and love each other.
I know that ther were people already in poverty but i had no idea that there were 1.5 billion people in the world are in poverty.
Compassion can have an effect on the worl because it gives some people hope that there is a chance that things will get better for them.
I can show compassion by helping other people or sending money to people that really need it.
1. To me compassion means showing care and kindness to those around you.
2. In my life I experianced commpassion when my parents invited this woman from our church, who had no family left, to eat with us on christmas. I thought it was very compassionate of them!
3.Three things i learned were, first bead for life is lifting women out of poverty. Second, "In the world today, 1.2 billion people live in extreme poverty." Third, "Before Bead For Life, many women were getting less than a dollar a day to crush rocks."
4.I already knew that Bead for Life's profit went to women in Africa.
5. Compassion can have an effect on the world around me because if one person shows compassion, that could inspire more to show compassion and if that would happen everyone would be showing compassion!
6. In the future, to show compassion, I can raise money to send to people who are in need or, donate my old clothes and toys to others in need of them!
1. To me, Compassion means helping others in need. It's important to do so, and to make the world you live in a better place.
2. Just very random acts of kindness throughout our school and community happen everyday. And it's a joy being part of a nice group of people!
3. What I learned is that people all around the world need a lot of help, and that life isn't perfect but with hard work we can change that. These women have been helped. but wer need to reach out above and beyond and solve everything as one world working together.
4. Last year, Ms.Webb had sold some bracelets in our spanish class. I bought one, not nearly knowing as much as I do now, thinking that the money would be donated somewhere, but not knowing the background behind Bead for Life.
5. Compassion in so many ways, is one of the only things that has effect on the whole world. We wouldn't be anywhere without the love and giving of so many people. This is one of the only things that you can do, that truly goes a long way.
6. I think the biggest thing I have done personally is help my parents with my 6 year old brother. I will continue to do that in the future and maybe find another way to show compassion towards others.
To me compassion means to show kindness towards people and things around you and to live life to the fullest. I have experienced compassion many times throughout my entire life. When i needed a shoulder to cry on or something to helpm me get through my day people have always been there for me and I will spread the comoassion that was given to me to other people. One of the things that surprised me is that women worked crushing rocks and got paid less then a dollar for all their work. The second is that the beads travel around the world and people know when they buy them that they are helping women in Africa. The third is that women and Africa actually made these beads out of recycled paper and the works of arts are just amazing. I knew that women had a hard time raising their families in impoverished countries while we in the U.S do not give a thought to it anytime. Compassion can affect me and the world around me by making the world purer and a happy place to be. I have volunteered at the homeless shelter by making pies for them on thanksgiving. Everyone there was so grateful and it made me feel really great about myself and me helping people.
1. Compassion in my words, is helping someone or a cause and expecting nothing in return.
2. I have experianced compassion by the encouragement, and help my family has given me through school and sports.
3. Three things that surprised me are that these women used to earn less than a dollar a day, that from bead for life these women have been able to provide homes for their family, and lastly the dedication that the women have to sit and string and make beads all day.
4. I already knew before seeing this video that bead for life helps to decrease poverty.
5. Compassion can affect the world by making it better. The more compassion is given out the better our personality is, and therefore spreading it throughout the world, to make it a more positive place.
6. I have shown compassion by helping my little sister with her homework, and donating to the homeless shelter.
1) Compassion to me means that you care and that you treat them like you want them to treat you.
2)When people treat me nicely it makes we want to treat them just as well as they treated me.
3)I learned that some people really need help to get them going and from there they start to do better in life. I learned that making things is a good way to support a family if they need help. I also learned that people really care about others and they want to help these people get back on their feet.
4) I really didn't know much.
5)It can make the world a better place and their will be a lot of nicer people in the world.
6) I can donate money and/ or cans to help that will provide food.
a world without bullies, a world with out insicurity. A world where we can get along, and not care about what the other likes, or wears, or draws. A world where everyone has enough food, where forests are plentyful.
from my familyof course, from one of my dearest friends, Will (not in this grade)because he likes me for my spirit, for my personality. he does not critizize my actions such as Paige, or beat me down like Gracie. He is open, and not affraid to tell me what he thinks of me.
how little money they had
how many people were in povery
that this was going on for a long time
well, i did already see this last year, so i knew they were in trouble and BeadsForLife was really helping them
It would make Middle School a whole heck of a lot easyer, that's for sure. And going through puberty would be too.
i do not have enough money, but some day i will buy as amny of those darn beads as i can.
also, i did do his one thing, a few Christmases ago, my mom and i dicided to give a gift to an orphanage. we got one for a little girl, about six at the time. I pai for half of it. When we gave it to them, they cried (well, just kind of teared a bit) they were so happy. They said they had promised her that "santa" would bring her something, but no one had donated anything to her, and Cristmas was only a day away. I felt so good, so happy, there was nothing else like it.

The word compassion to me means being nice to people.

1.To me, Compassion means people who care, and love each other and happiness!
2.I have experienced compassion by my mother. She makes me feel warm and Happy when she is there with me! I love her. She loves me too.
3.I was surprised that the beads were made out of recycled paper. Also, I learned that now women can have jobs and an education! I also found out that that there are alot of women with disieses, such as HIV!
4.I knew that the women had really hard times to live and care for their children.
5.Compassion can affect the world because then, we could all live a Happy and enjoyable life.
6.I showed compassion by donating toys, food and beds to the Orange County Animal Shelter. This has made me think of all the poor animals and people in this world that need our help!
#2
One time my family and I expierienced compassion by getting a free Christmas tree. We got it because my dad's friend was the guy who was in charge of selling the trees. When we asked him how much the tree was he said we could have it for free.
#3
I was surprised buy how many people buy the beads, the amount of money people make from them, and how many people make them.
#5

3.one, I didn't know that one in five people are living in poverty. second, I had no idea that some people are living off under one dollar a day.
4.I knew that all the necklaces were made by hand
5.It effects everyone because you learn from tour surroundings
6.I could support programs similar to this, or I could support the program itself.
Compassion to me means that you put others before yourself, help others and treat them with respect.
I've gone to many food and toy drives with friends and family. For Thanksgiving, Purim, or just because it's the right thing to do.
1 out of 5 people in the world live on a dollar a day.
The beads are made from recycled paper.
BeadforLife can get women to build there own houses.
I didn't know anything about BeadforLife until I saw this video.
If everyone helped in
1. To me, compassion means, showing how much you care about the world and all the people in the world.
2. My swim coach is very compassionate towards me, he comes to practice every single day and helps us get faster.
3.I was suprised that all those women only erned one dollar a day, also that one women had HIV and now has made a full recovery, and thatthey make those braclets out of paper.
4. I already knew almost everything from last year.
5. Compasion can make the world a better place, it can give the homeless a home and the hungary food.
6. I can bring canned food for the food drive.
1. To me it means to guide somebody or to care about somebody.
2.when people do something good to me I return the favor if they needed something.
3.woman sing and dance when they do something good like bead for life. they made it out of paper. woman use to work onrocks by hitting them.
4.I really didn't know anything about this before.
5. More people would be happy maybe. Because so much people would be nice and love other people.
6. To do good stuff for other people and to be nice to everybody.
1. to me it means when u respect sombody or when u really care about sombody or sombody that does not hurt a nother person.2. I have experinced it when i was with my friend and i over heard his friend to call me a name and he did not say something bad to me that is when i have expirenced compassion.3. That women can live without men and they built a house for there self with only women building those houses. they make those beads to try to change the world. That they have classes to help them with there life and get them money.4.i did not know anything about them they are reallly smart.5.people will not call me names or try to put me down6.i did funraiser for the poor and a food drive
1)to me compassion means when you try to do all you can for someone in need of your services.
2) i helped my grandma with stuff aruond her house
3)the beeds are made of paper, they come in lots of colors, one womann got treatment for her aids thaks to bed for life.
4)the money was going to women in africa.
5)people around the world could by stuff from beed for life so the won't have to live in poverty
6)i can donate to the red cross.
To me, compassion means something bigger than one person. It means helping and influencing others to care and love, as well as training yourself to do the same. Luckily, i have always grown up in a loving and compassionate home, and i try my hardest to give the compassion i feel back to my community. In this video, i was really surprised that these women were making so little when their job was so tiring. I was also surprised how popular beadforlife has become, how many people buy the beautiful jewelry these women make. I was also astonished to know how many women make the beads, and how it can support their families so well. I already knew that these beads were being sold, and that they were made by impoverished women in Africa. Compassion has the ability to change people for the better or for the worse. If a person is shown compassion, they can become a better person who can spread compassion, because they've now been taught it. Currently, i volunteer every saturday at the local animal shelter, which i hope to continue to do for a long time!
Ian Mckeown-7th grade-Smith Middle School-Ms.Webb

Sunjeev G.-smith-
I found it surprising that 1.2 billion people are living in poverty, making less than a dollar a day. Also that this is helping women with HIV.People can help show compassion by buying some necklaces from beads for life or donating money to Africa or other poverty-stricken places. I can show compassion by maybe helping out at a soup kitchen or a homeless shelter.
sunjeev G-3rd period-
compassion means that not judging by a person's race religion or indigence but accepting them.
I have experienced compassion by people not judging me about my race or religion
It suprised me how much these women were disparaged. It also surprised me how poor they were. It surprised me how bad their living conditions were.
I already knew that people living in Africa were as poor as this.
Compassion can affect the world by teaching people how to treat others.
I treat others the same way I would like to be treated and I also except them.
